Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. We are hiring a Resident Engagement Supervisor who will be responsible for overseeing and guiding a team of Resident Engagement Coordinators ensuring they effectively implement best practices in supervision security and treatment. Lead the daily facilitation and implementation of the facility-wide PBIS program which includes managing resident incentives activities and the incentive room. Enhance positive youth outcomes and uphold operational excellence.

Work schedule : Monday - Friday 11 AM - 8 PM two Saturdays per month

Core Responsibilities : (Not limited to)

  • Administrative Duties-HR Management - Appropriately monitors and reports timekeeping and leave records and ensures appropriate notification of new hires separating employees and employees on extended leave of absence(s). Disciplinary actions are properly documented and reviewed. Interviewing selection and hiring of employees is conducted in accordance with policy and law; employees are oriented and trained to effectively accomplish their work.
  • Administrative Duties-Capital Resource Management - Effectively manages costs for overtime wage employment and contractual services by maximizing the use of resources scheduling effectively and delegating and distributing workloads appropriately.
  • PBIS Program Leadership & Management - Observes the daily facilitation and implementation of the facility-wide PBIS program ensuring its consistent application across all shifts and units. Coordinate various facility-wide activities and special programs designed to support and reinforce the PBIS framework and promote positive resident behavior. Monitor PBIS data analyze trends and recommend program adjustments to enhance resident engagement and behavioral outcomes.
  • General Juvenile Record / BADGE Duties - Handle confidential and sensitive juvenile information in accordance with laws policies and DJJ guidance including encrypting emails containing sensitive information (e.g. 16.1-223 16.1-300 6VAC35-160 6VAC35-170).
  • Team Supervision & Development - Coordinators enhancing their skills in resident management group facilitation conflict resolution and intervention techniques. Conduct regular performance evaluations identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for the team. Manage staff scheduling leave requests and ensure adequate coverage for all engagement activities and PBIS implementation. Address staff conflicts and performance issues effectively and professionally demonstrating patience and perseverance. Provide empathetic and emotionally stable support to both staff and youth particularly during challenging situations.
  • Security & Treatment Integration - Ensure Resident Engagement Coordinators consistently apply best practices in supervision security and management of services. Guide staff on the appropriate use of verbal and physical intervention techniques ensuring proficiency and adherence to policy. Ensure staff maintain considerable knowledge of security procedures and actively contribute to maintaining a safe environment. Coordinate and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members (e.g. behavioral services education security case management) to comprehensively deliver programming and integrate engagement strategies with individual treatment plans.
  • Application & Reporting - Review and evaluate records and reports prepared by RECs ensuring accuracy completeness and compliance with documentation standards demonstrating strong attention to detail.

Essential Skills : (Not limited to)

  • Strong ability to coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to achieve integrated resident care and facility goals.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution verbal de-escalation and appropriate physical intervention.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles techniques and practices of group facilitation enabling effective leadership of youth groups.
  • Attention to detail patience perseverance ability to be empathetic and emotionally stable when providing support to staff and youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to review and evaluate records and reports.
  • Proven ability to work independently effectively plan organize and supervise residents and staff.
  • Directly overseeing the daily implementation of the facility-wide PBIS program including managing the incentive system incentive room and coordinating facility-wide activities that support the PBIS framework.
  • Providing direct supervision coaching and mentorship to Resident Engagement Coordinators (RECs); conducting performance evaluations; facilitating professional development; managing staff schedules; addressing conflicts; and providing empathetic support to staff and youth.
  • Ensuring RECs apply best practices in supervision security and resident management; guiding staff on intervention techniques; ensuring knowledge of security procedures; and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams for integrated programming delivery.
  • Ensuring staff apply knowledge of adolescent development intellectual disabilities and mental health disorders; overseeing the planning and supervision of residents by RECs; reviewing / evaluating records and reports for accuracy and compliance and PBIS implementation fidelity.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience supervising coaching and developing a team.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles techniques and practices of safety treatment and management of services in a secure residential environment for juveniles.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development behavior intellectual disabilities and common mental health disorders affecting court-involved youth.
  • Considerable knowledge of security procedures institutional policies and their practical application in daily operations.
  • Experience supervising and interacting with at-risk or adjudicated youth.
  • Additional Considerations

  • Demonstrated experience with PBIS or similar behavior management systems.
  • Current certification in First Aid CPR and crisis intervention techniques (e.g. Handle with Care CPI PMCS) or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Direct supervisory experience over staff in a similar environment
