JOB SUMMARY :

Supports the dental team and performs a range of tasks in the dental office, ranging from patient care, laboratory functions, pouring models and taking impressions. This position requires a diverse set of skills : clinical, clerical, interpersonal and technological which allows the Dental team to function smoothly and better serve the patients as scheduled.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Perform chair side assisting duties that encompass all routine dental procedures in general dentistry.
  • Take and record vital signs as needed.
  • Properly record all treatment rendered to patients and accurately retrieves and files dental chart.
  • Prepare patient operatory for proper dental procedures including setting up the proper instruments.
  • Responsible for cleaning, packaging, and sterilizing all dental instruments for proper storage when not in use, and maintains the dental clinic in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Responsible for proper exposure, processing, of radiographic digital x-rays placed in patient chart.
  • Provides topical fluoride treatment as directed by the dentist, able to perform routine dental laboratory procedures, including pouring, trimming models, constructing custom trays, and labeling models and lab trays.
  • Can take alginate impressions, bite registrations for study models and shade selection for esthetics.
  • Explains post treatment instructions to patients, motivates and instructs patient in proper preventive techniques. Enters notes in chart where the patient needs improvement in hygiene.
  • Responsible for keeping operatories well supplied.
  • Assisting with dental education and prevention programs such as diabetes, Head Start, elderly, etc.
  • Chair side duties including, dental sealants, dental dams, retraction cords, suture removal.
  • Fabricate, place and remove temporary crowns and bridges.
  • Takes inventory of dental supplies and prepares orders for dental supplies as needed.
  • Enters patient visit data into RPMS for Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) reporting.
  • Coordinates and plans programs for the management and prevention of dental disease.
  • Perform coronal polishing and remove of supragingival calculus.
  • Motivates patients to improve plaque removal and periodontal health.
  • Troubleshoot, service, repair, and maintain operatory equipment, headpieces, compressor, and dental vacuum units as needed.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION :

  • A High School Diploma or GED
  • Washington State Dental Assistant registration
  • Proof of completion of seven clock hours of AIDS education and training.
  • Proof of Basic Life Support Training
  • One year experience as a dental assistant
  • PREFERRED SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES POSITION :

  • Ability to work effectively with Native American people in culturally diverse environments
  • Must have basic computer and office equipment skills.
  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality policy.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of all instruments normally used in routine dental procedures for all specialties of dental treatment.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe sterile procedures. Competent in the safe operating procedures of x-ray equipment
  • Basic Clinical Periodontics for Dental Assistants certificate of completion.
  • Knowledge of dental anatomy and ability to properly expose and process diagnostic radiographs.
  • Ability to recognize common dental disorders and conditions such as inflamed tissue and tooth decay.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures to minimize the risks associated with equipment such as x-ray machines and skills in adjusting and operating dental radiographic equipment.
  • Ability to explain to patient postoperative instructions, preventive techniques and home care instructions.
  • Ability to enter patient encounters accurately into Dentrix and RPMS and provide reports as request.
  • REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

  • Must pass alcohol / drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
  • Must provide documentation of immunity to measles and rubella or become vaccinated with the recommended vaccine and Hepatitis B vaccine and test annually for TB.
  • REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS :

  • Washington State Dental Assistant registration.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ( The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.) :

  • Work involves regular and recurring exposure to communicable disease, radiation, flying debris, nitrous oxide, toxic fumes from dental laboratory materials, violet and blue light emission from light curing units.
  • Work involves the need for masks, lead aprons, and protective eyewear and clothing are needed to protect yourself and patient from infectious diseases.
  • Must be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing.
  • May be required to sit for long periods during dental procedures.
  • Frequently sit, stand; walk, talk and hear use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to reach out and pick-up and hold small objects.
  • Occasionally lift and / or move up to twenty five pounds.
  • Work is generally performed in a climate controlled setting with a moderate noise level.
  • Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Exposure to latex products on a routine basis.
  • Exposed to aerosol, powders and dust.
