Job descriptionPrioritizes patient problems through critical thinking, distinguishing significant from non-significant deviations from normal and urgent from non-urgent needs. Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining individualized patient care plans. Administers medications and performs treatments / procedures following the five rights of medication administration and medical plan protocols. Initiates and manages peripheral IV administration and maintenance fluid administration within state regulations and hospital standards. Conducts patient and family education under RN supervision. Applies standards of care effectively to ensure efficient patient care delivery. Maintains competency in routine nursing procedures. Cultivates a positive work environment by fostering constructive communication and relationships. Engages in formal and informal staff development activities within and outside the nursing unit. Identifies opportunities to enhance workflow efficiency and reduce care costs. Completion of a Practical Nursing Program approved by the State Board of Nursing. Basic Arrhythmia Course upon hire or within 6 months required One year general medical / surgical (acute care) experience in an acute care setting preferred Successful completion of an approved pharmacology course prior to hire Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire or completed within one month of hire Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification Act 34

UPMC Somerset's Acute Care is made up of the Cardiology Medicine Unit & Surgical Acute Care unit. These positions work rotating shifts including holidays and weekends. The Acute Care departments are truly a team! Employees are cross trained to function on both units and will float as needed.
