Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing daily operations, managing facility resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, coordinating departments, implementing strategic initiatives, maintaining quality standards, and optimizing operational efficiency. The COO ensures efficient delivery of patient care while maintaining operational excellence and financial sustainability. This position requires extensive healthcare management experience and the ability to coordinate multiple departments, from clinical services to support functions.

Reporting directly to the President, Faculty Practice Organization & Senior Vice President (SVP), Ambulatory Services, the COO will be a core member of the Ambulatory Business Unit (BU) Senior Executive Team which includes the following members :

  • Chief Financial Officer, Ambulatory (CFO)
  • Chief Medical Officer, Ambulatory (CMO)
  • Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Ambulatory (ACNO)
  • Chief of Staff, Ambulatory (CoS)
  • Chief Strategy Officer, Ambulatory (CSO)
  • HR Business Partner, Ambulatory (HRBP)

In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), and the rest of the Ambulatory BU Senior Executive team, the COO leads overall strategic planning for Ambulatory services. Additionally, the COO provides oversight across several clinical services departments and plays an integral role in implementing UCSF's strategic growth endeavors.

The COO will also have an indirect reporting relationship to the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of UCSF Health. In this role, they will collaborate with the COO and SVP of UCSF Health and their team, and other Business Unit COOs as part of their broader responsibilities within the health system. They will ensure that the Ambulatory BU remains aligned with system-wide standards related to supply chain management, outpatient access, patient experience, and growth.

The COO of the Ambulatory BU is responsible for overseeing daily operations, managing facility resources, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This role drives operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and high-quality patient care by coordinating clinical and support departments, implementing strategic initiatives, and aligning goals across programs and affiliate partners.

Key responsibilities include managing budgets, resource allocation, and administrative functions; developing operational policies; ensuring adherence to healthcare standards; and leading quality improvement and patient satisfaction efforts. Extensive healthcare management experience is essential for successfully integrating services across the system.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $273,200 - $575,400 (Annual Rate).

UCSF Health is divided into four business units : Adult services, Pediatric services, Ambulatory services, and the UCSF affiliated network. Each business unit has its own president and senior executive team. Historically, the Ambulatory Business Unit (BU) was the faculty practice organization (FPO) and its affiliated clinics. The Ambulatory BU has expanded to include all sites of care in San Francisco focused on adult or pediatric care including clinics, infusion care, outpatient pharmacy operations, and ambulatory surgical centers. Today, there are over 600 unique ambulatory clinics in 37 different locations.

Of the four business units at UCSF Health, Ambulatory Services (currently a $2.9 billion operation) is the fastest growing and represents a major strategic priority for the organization moving forward. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as a strategic thought leader to help drive institutional growth while monitoring and maintaining a strong position within clinical operations.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) sits within UCSF Health's Ambulatory Business Unit, which advances the goals and priorities of the President, Faculty Practice Organization & Senior Vice President of Ambulatory services, in collaboration with the Ambulatory Senior Executive team. The UCSF Health Ambulatory Business Unit consists of ambulatory operations including surgical centers, outpatient cancer services & infusion care, and outpatient pharmacy operations. There are over 600 unique ambulatory clinics in 37 different locations. The annual revenue of Ambulatory services is >

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration or clinical degree and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Ten (10) or more years of progressive management or leadership experience in an academic medical center or large healthcare system.
  • Extensive executive management experience in a complex health care organization.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, and organizational development.
  • Highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center executives, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.
