Overview
The Senior Underwriting Manager will lead a team of Underwriting Managers and their respective Underwriting staff, ensuring consistent application of credit policies, compliance with regulatory standards, and investor guidelines. This leadership role combines day-to-day oversight with strategic responsibility for improving credit quality, scaling operations, and contributing to long-term risk mitigation. The ideal candidate brings deep mortgage underwriting expertise, proven leadership capability, and a forward-looking mindset to drive process innovation, support automation initiatives, and strengthen risk controls.
This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary of $154,000, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k).
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Underwriting Managers and their respective underwriting teams to drive performance, engagement, and operational excellence.
- Provide strategic and tactical guidance to strengthen underwriting leadership capabilities, ensure consistent decision-making, and enhance overall team effectiveness.
- Monitor workload allocation and team productivity to meet service-level agreements (SLAs) while maintaining quality and compliance standards.
- Lead initiatives to modernize underwriting processes through automation, digital tools, and data-driven decisioning models.
- Monitor overall production and performance of underwriting operations, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and quality while maintaining compliance standards.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to define and execute underwriting strategies that align with business growth, credit risk appetite, and investor expectations.
- Lead initiatives to transform underwriting processes through automation, data-driven decisioning, and digital tools.
- Review and approve complex and escalated loan files with delegated authority limits.
- Develop and maintain internal controls and quality assurance programs to monitor accuracy, consistency, and risk exposure
- Collaborate with Risk and Credit Policy teams to refine and enhance underwriting standards.
- Ensure consistent adherence to all underwriting policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and implement strategies and best practices to improve efficiency, quality, and consistency in underwriting processes.
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Compliance, Risk, and Training to ensure underwriting practices remain compliant and scalable.
- Oversee adherence to federal, state, agency, and investor guidelines; support internal and external audit requests as needed.
- Provide thought leadership on market trends, regulatory changes, and emerging credit risks to inform policy updates and executive decisions.
- Support change management efforts related to policy rollouts, system enhancements, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, or related field preferred.10+ years of progressive underwriting experience, including at least 7 years in a leadership role.Proven experience managing other managers in a high-volume underwriting environment.Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic initiatives within underwriting or credit risk.Deep knowledge of residential mortgage products, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management abilities.Lakeview is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
