Job description

FUNCTION Reporting to the Director of Operations, the VESL Instructor is responsible for providing both group-based and one-on-one English instruction to participants with varying levels of proficiency in a classroom setting.

The instructor supports participants’ enrollment in allied healthcare vocational training programs and workforce preparedness.

Additionally, the instructor develops and delivers engaging and effective curriculum in a culturally competent and sensitive manner, tailored to individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, to support their acquisition of English language skills that enhance employability and integration into vocational training and the workforce.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  (The functions are not exhaustive and may be altered by Leadership to the extent it aligns with the position.) U phold and support the mission, policies, procedures, and protocols of NSDI.

Deliver individual and group-based Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) instruction across multiple proficiency levels, including specialized tracks in digital literacy for allied healthcare careers.

Develop and implement engaging, goal-aligned curriculum and lesson plans that support English language acquisition for vocational and workplace success.

Conduct student placement assessments, monitor learner progress, and adjust instruction accordingly.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, homework, and student progress in accordance with NSDI guidelines.

Collaborate with program staff to ensure instruction aligns with participants' vocational goals, particularly in the allied healthcare field.

Create and maintain accurate electronic student files and program documentation.

Foster a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment that supports the needs of learners from diverse backgrounds.

Stay informed on current ESL teaching methodologies, pedagogical approaches, and learner engagement strategies.

Communicate and coordinate regularly with team members, attend meetings and contribute to a collaborative program environment.

Assist with program promotion through presentations and outreach efforts.

Support the Director of Operations with administrative tasks, including data tracking and program reporting.

Provide excellent customer service to participants and stakeholders.

Perform other duties as assigned by NSDI Leadership.

REQUIREMENTS OF QUALIFIED CANDIDATES Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum 2+ years of experience developing and teaching ESL classes; experience in workforce or vocational training programs strongly preferred.

ESL certification (e.g., TESOL, TEFL, CELTA) strongly preferred.

Demonstrated ability to teach diverse adult learner populations with varying English proficiency levels.

Skilled in creating engaging, adaptive, and culturally responsive instruction that accommodates learners with varied educational backgrounds.

Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to both individuals and groups.

Proven ability to maintain accurate and timely data records, including student enrollment, attendance, and progress tracking.

Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and other digital tools; familiarity with database and reporting systems.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; dependable, flexible, and resourceful in a dynamic learning environment.

Demonstrates a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct when working with participants and sensitive information.

Collaborative and team-oriented, with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships across the organization and with external partners.

Ability to function independently and to work effectively and in a collegial manner with co-workers and program participants.

Complete required Sexual Harassment Prevention and HIPAA training for employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS, JOB SETTING, and COMPENSATION Part-time, non-exempt – 10-15 hours / week; Compensation is commensurate with experience and educational background.

Work will be performed in a classroom setting at NSDI office(s), as well as in an office setting, and requires the use of electronic equipment, including computers, telephone, etc.

Flexibility in schedule, including scheduled weeknights and weekends, when necessary.

Visual / hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written / verbal and telephone communication.

Ability to sit for long periods, stand, computer entry, walking, repeated bending, lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs, and reaching.
