Description :
A surgical technician is responsible for assisting in the performance of routine and delegated functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.
They perform scrub assignments according to established guidelines.
This includes applying principles and practices of asepsis, performing surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedures.
They set up sterile instrument tables and prepare supplies according to the type of operation.
The technician assists in draping the patient and operative area as needed.
They anticipate the needs of the surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies based on knowledge of procedural requirements and constant monitoring of progress.
Observation of the patient is essential to be ready for emergencies.
A correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments must be maintained with the circulating nurse.
They report discrepancies according to established policy and procedure.
The technician maintains aseptic technique at all times and institutes corrective measures in case of contamination.
They assist in the care, handling, and disposition of specimens according to policy.
This role includes assisting in the application of dressings and securing drainage systems.
The technician helps in moving patients using approved transfer devices.
Soiled materials must be discarded in the appropriate receptacle.
All equipment, instruments, and reusable supplies must be decontaminated, and the room should be cleaned as prescribed.
Additionally, the surgical technician assists the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions.
They assemble and provide necessary supplies according to the requirements of the patient and the surgical procedure.
Special equipment is provided before, during, and after the surgical procedure as needed.
Correct positioning and application of restraints to observe and protect the patient are crucial.
The patient must be positioned correctly, and the table and accessories must be adjusted for the procedure.
They follow established guidelines using appropriate PPE in the surgical suite.
The operative area is prepared, and assistance in draping is provided as directed.
Correct sponge, needle, and instrument counts must be maintained, with discrepancies reported to the surgical team and charge nurse.
Accurate completion of operative counts and related records is required.
The technician continuously observes personnel in the room to control traffic and report and correct breaks in aseptic technique promptly.
Specimens must be maintained and cared for as directed to prevent loss or damage.
They assist in applying dressings, moving patients, and transferring them to recovery rooms as directed.
The technician also helps in room cleanup and preparations for the next procedure.
In addition, the surgical technician prepares medications or solutions to be administered during surgery under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.
Medicated solutions are mixed at the sterile field under supervision, and all medications that are not already labeled must be labeled appropriately.
The name, concentration, amount, and route of administration of the medication should be announced clearly.
Narcotics or controlled drugs are not dispensed by the technician.
They assist in meeting operational needs by transporting patients to and from the surgical suite as directed.
The technician notifies any changes in par levels and instrumentation or equipment specific to the unit.
Keeping operating rooms and sterile storage areas organized is essential.
Updating preference cards as needed is also part of their responsibilities.
