Job specification

  • Nurses will be responsible for administering medications and treatments as ordered by the facility's healthcare provider. This may include oral medications, injections, and other medical interventions.
  • Responsible for conducting initial assessments and ongoing evaluations of inmates' health status. This may involve taking vital signs, assessing symptoms, and communicating with the healthcare provider about any changes in the inmate's condition.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for each inmate they care for. This includes documenting assessments, medications administered, and any other nursing interventions provided.
  • Must be prepared to respond to medical emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, seizures, and injuries. They must have the necessary training and equipment to provide life-saving interventions until additional medical help arrives.
  • Responsible for providing education to inmates about various health topics, such as chronic disease management, medication adherence, and preventive health practices.
  • Nurses will work closely with the healthcare provider, such as the physician or nurse practitioner, to develop and implement a plan of care for each inmate.

Candidate requirements

  • Should possess a high school diploma or an equivalent, such as a General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • Must have completed an accredited LPN program (NCLEX- PN) with experience in basic nursing skills such as medication administration, vital sign-taking, and basic patient care.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing(BSN) or an Applied Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Must have completed an accredited RN program (NCLEX -RN), with an experience in advanced nursing skills and theory, including nursing management, leadership, and research.
  • Should have excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work well under pressure in addition to these academic qualifications. Nurses must be licensed and certified.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification : BLS certification is typically required for nurses working in healthcare settings.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification : ACLS certification may be required for nurses working in higher acuity settings or with patients who have complex medical needs.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification : PALS certification may be required for nurses working with pediatric patients.
  • Correctional Nursing Certification (CNC) : The CNC is a specialty certification for nurses who work in correctional settings, and may be preferred or required for nurses working in Georgia correctional facilities or as requested by the employer.
