Job description

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Student Development the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is a live-in professional who oversees all the daily operations and leadership of their assigned residential community. The incumbents responsibility includes but is not limited to the following areas : lead Graduate Residential Life Coordinators (GRLCs) Resident Assistants (RAs) and Student Assistants (SAs) case coordination centering around student behavior residential curriculum and community development and administrative components. The RLC participates in departmental initiatives and leads or serves on committees as needed. The incumbent assists in the overall development and implementation of the Residential Life and Student Housing programs including the coordination of the residential life staff programs services and facilities of the program. The incumbent is required to live in on-campus in University-provided accommodations so that emergency response requirements can be met effectively and promptly. Incumbent is encouraged to eat meals with students in university dining facilities.

Furthermore the incumbent provides services that are equitable inclusive and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Staff Development & Leadership : Assist with recruitment selection placement evaluation and personnel administration for residential life compensated student leaders.
  • Student Behavior Crisis Management and Case Coordination : Assess and address student concerns and crisis and coordinate case to assist resident with university resources.
  • Residential Curriculum Community Development and Student Success : Maintain work schedules designed for maximum accessibility and involvement with students.
  • Administration & Committee Work : Oversee daily building administration procedures and operation including opening and closing the buildings for the new academic year and break period.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Excellent knowledge of English grammar business writing punctuation and spelling. Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports. Knowledge of practices procedures and activities related to student Residential Life programs. Two years of experience with Residence Hall Management preferred. Minimum one year experience supervising Resident Assistants (RAs) or other University student workers preferred. Minimum of one year experience in counseling advising and programming for college-level students preferred. Demonstrated experience with planning developing and conducting training seminars workshops and retreats. Demonstrated experience with selection and training of student staff particularly in a Housing and Residential Life environment.

Demonstrated counseling skills particularly in student development conflict resolution and group dynamics. General knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques and ability to listen and reason logically. Ability to assess needs quickly and effectively and intervene in student behavioral and crisis scenarios involving physical and / or emotional risk. General knowledge of group facilitation oral presentation and public speaking skills. General knowledge of personal and social problems typically encountered by college students. Commitment to exclusivity and social justice; a demonstrated ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse student population.

Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters and general knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of overall operation functions and programs of California State University Long Beach. Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to collect compile analyze and evaluate factual data and make oral or written presentations based on these data. Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters and general knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to maintain dignity and self-control in stressful situations; and ability to respond to emergency and crisis situations. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff faculty administrators and private and public agencies.

Exhibition of a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently in complex situations; and of creativity originality and innovation in the development of training and orientation programs. Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment and to handle multiple work priorities organize and plan work and projects. Ability to develop accurate budget projections and monitor expenses. Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies including ability to maintain professionalism at all times. Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state federal CSU and CSULB policies and procedures. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff peers administrators campus and University personnel clients state officials vendors professionals management etc. and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Demonstrated experience with applying sound professional judgment. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others including the ability to maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Understanding of confidentiality standards related to FERPA and Title IX.

Ability to work variable hours as needed including occasional late nights early mornings and weekends as situations arise. The incumbent must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students faculty and staff. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Must live on campus in university-provided accommodations so that emergency response requirements can be effectively and promptly fulfilled.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies procedures and guidelines including but not limited to safety civility information security and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the universitys commitment to a vision of excellence.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelors degree in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

Two years of experience in student housing preferred.

Masters degree in student development Higher Education Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a directly related field preferred.

This position requires the incumbent to live on campus pursuant to terms and conditions in the Life-in-Staff Agreement and terms.

This position is responsible for responding to emergencies in late evening ad or early hours.

The incumbent works a 40-hour work week with varied shifts and times evening weekends holiday a non-traditional hour.

Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and / or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing squatting kneeling or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education experience and qualifications the candidate brings to the position internal equity and the hiring departments fiscal resources.

Hiring Range : The hiring range for this position is $5083- $5350 per month commensurate with candidates education experience skills and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range : The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5083 - $7228 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Additional Information

Campus Security Authority

This position serves as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and Executive Order 1107. Incumbent is required to promptly report allegations of Clery qualifying crimes that occur within a campus Clery geography.)

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and / or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
