There are 2 operating room suites located on the postpartum side. Triage is conducted within the labor and delivery area. There are no postpartum beds available. The unit averages 3-4 births per day, totaling approximately 1100 births last year. Ratios adhere to AWHONN guidelines. Common diagnoses include laboring patients, inductions, cesarean deliveries, antepartum patients with issues, fetal demises, and triage patients with concerns of 20 weeks or greater. Registered Nurses are required to titrate drips, including Pitocin, insulin, and magnesium. There is usually a free charge nurse or house supervisor available. An OB technician is present on the unit. An OB / neonatologist is available in-house 24 / 7. Pulse oximetry monitors are used routinely. Telemonitoring is available on this unit with Registered Nurses reading strips for magnesium patients. The fetal monitoring system used is Fetal Link integrated with Cerner. Staff is scheduled to work three times a week. Weekend coverage includes one weekend every other week. Holiday coverage requires one major holiday and two minor holidays. There is a call requirement of one on-call shift every two weeks. The required scrub color is light blue, provided for each shift. Unit-specific orientation lasts one day. The facility may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system utilized is Cerner.
