Job Summary

This position inspects buildings to ensure compliance with applicable national, state and county building, safety and energy codes. Reports to the Chief Structural Inspector.

Essential Functions

  • Reads building plans and specifications to compare with actual construction.
  • Performs thorough structural inspections to ensure compliance with Florida Building Codes, safety and energy codes, Broward County Rules and other requirements.
  • Prepares inspection reports, including correction recommendations.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from homeowners / property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, etc., regarding codes and compliance procedures.
  • Performs general administrative / office work as required, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other City department personnel, property / homeowners, developers, contractors, architects, engineers, trade workers, County personnel, general public, etc.
  • Provides excellent customer service by clearly and politely explaining code requirements to applicants and the general public.
  • Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment, including a computer, typewriter, calculator, copier, telephone, small hand tools, etc.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned and / or required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid state driver's license
  • Special Requirements :

    Per Broward County Administrative Code 104.16.3 for a person to be eligible for appointment as Structural Inspector, such person shall meet at least one (1) of the following :

  • Be a Florida Registered Architect or a Florida Licensed Professional Engineer with two (2) years of HVHZ experience or by-passing BORA's HVHZ exam
  • Be a certified Standard Inspector in the Structural discipline with two (2) years of HVHZ experience or by-passing BORA's HVHZ exam. An individual qualifying through this path shall be required to acquire a General Contractor (GC) license, by exam, within one (1) year of initial certification as an inspector if such person don't have the (GC) license
  • Be a licensed General Contractor (GC) with at least five (5) years of experience within the State of Florida in the Structural discipline of which two (2) years shall have been within the HVHZ or by-passing BORA's HVHZ exam
  • A person with five (5) years construction experience in the Structural discipline in a supervisory capacity of which at least two (2) years shall have been in HVHZ or by- passing BORA's HVHZ exam. An individual qualifying through this path shall be required to acquire an Unlimited General Contractor (GC) license, by exam from : (CILB) or Broward County Examining Board or the Miami-Dade Construction Trades Qualifying Board, within one (1) year of initial certification as an inspector.

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

    Requires moderate physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds. May require frequent crouching, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Frequent periods of standing or walking may be required.

    CITY OF MIRAMAR

    This is a union / represented position; the below summary of benefits provided by the City is applicable to all full-time positions covered under the G.A.M.E. Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

    PAID TIME OFF

  • City - Observed H olidays : Twelve (12) paid full-day holidays and two (2) paid half-day holidays (Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve) per year
  • Personal Floating Holidays : Five (5) paid full-day floating holidays to use in addition to the existing observed holidays

    Sick Time : Employees earn sick time at the rate of one (1) day per month.

    Vacation Time : Employees earn vacation time from the date of hire and accrue hours bi-weekly based on the following service schedule :

    Years of Service Vacation Hours per Year Less than 4 years 80 hours 4 - 9.99 years 120 hours 10 - 19.99 years 160 hours 20 - 29.99 years 200 hours

    Note : Accrued time (vacation and sick) begins from the first month of employment but cannot be accessed until after the third month of employment.

  • Medical : The City offers three (3) medical insurance options through Aetna : HMO, POS & HDHP w / HSA. Eligibility date is based on the following schedule :

    Note : Completion of an annual preventative care physical is required to avoid an $15.00 per paycheck increase in the rates outlined above.

    RETIREMENT PLANS

  • Defined Benefit (Pension) Plan : A pension plan provides a guaranteed benefit at retirement if certain criteria are met. The amount of your future benefit is determined by a formula, based on earnings, length of service and Plan multiplier. Participation in the Pension Plan is mandatory for all full-time employees.
  • The Summary Plan Description (SPD) provides more detailed information regarding the eligibility and benefits under the Plan; however, the below chart provides a highlight of the Plan.

  • SALARY INFORMATION

  • Salary Step Plan : All G.A.M.E. positions follow a progressive Salary Step Plan. Newly hired employees start at Step 1 for their job classification then every year, on the employee's anniversary date, the employee advances to the next Step in the Salary Step Plan, which provides an automatic increase in pay. (Step Schedule outlined in final section of G.A.M.E. CBA)
  • Longevity Incentive : Employees are eligible to receive longevity incentive pay based on the following schedule :
