Job Title : Assistant Manager - Clinical Operations - Emergency Department

Location : Methodist Hospital, IU Health, Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department

Schedule : Night Shift, Supportive of 1800-0600 hours; ideally 4, 10-hour shifts from 1400-0000, with flexibility for evening and night hours to partner with direct reports

Position Overview :

The Assistant Manager of Clinical Operations combines clinical experience and contemporary leadership practices with the IU Health Way to achieve excellent clinical outcomes. This role partners with the unit Manager to develop and implement action plans focused on quality and safety improvements, care affordability, and delivering exceptional patient and staff experiences. The incumbent leads the execution of these plans and analyzes their effectiveness. As a member of the interprofessional team, the Assistant Manager collaborates with the Manager to foster an environment where staff are empowered to achieve excellence in patient care and organizational outcomes. The role also supports advancing nursing practice by advocating for evidence-based practices and upholding professional nursing standards. This position supports the 24 / 7 operation of a busy, diverse Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department, including weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Partner with the unit Manager to develop and execute action plans for quality, safety, and patient experience improvements.
  • Lead the implementation and evaluation of these plans, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Support a positive, patient-centered, and team-oriented environment.
  • Mentor and empower staff, fostering professional development and evidence-based practice.
  • Assist in operational needs, staffing, and resource management to ensure high-quality care delivery.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and staff engagement.
  • Analyze clinical data and performance metrics to inform decision-making.
  • Support onboarding, training, and ongoing staff education initiatives.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required; leadership experience, such as charge nurse or shift coordinator, preferred.
  • Minimum of some leadership experience, especially in night or mid-shift roles.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, academic, or trauma environments preferred.
  • Current and active RN license in Indiana or NLC license required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Additional advanced life support certifications may be required per department policies.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead a team effectively.
