Job Title : Chief Accounting Officer (CAO)

Location : Indianapolis, Indiana

Employment Type : Full-Time

Position Summary :

The Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and oversees all accounting and financial reporting functions for our development division, corporately held entities, and our private equity open ended fund. This individual will lead the accounting team to ensure robust internal controls, regulatory compliance, accurate financial reporting, and strategic financial oversight across all asset classes.

Key Responsibilities :

Strategic Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for all accounting and financial reporting activities across the enterprise.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the executive team and Board of Directors on all financial reporting and accounting matters.
  • Serve as a financial steward ensuring fiscal integrity and long-term sustainability.
  • Oversee the preparation of consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and other applicable standards.
  • Ensure timely and accurate quarterly and annual financial reports for internal stakeholders, lenders, and investors.
  • Manage compliance with regulations and other regulatory requirements (e.g., SEC filings, if applicable, or alternative reporting structures for private equity funds).
  • Maintain proper accounting for the fund, including distribution tracking, income testing, and asset diversification compliance.
  • Collaborate with legal and tax advisors to ensure ongoing compliance and recommend structural optimizations.

Development & Asset Class Accounting

  • Direct accounting operations for all development projects, including cost capitalization, budget tracking, and construction draw processes.
  • Oversee accounting for multiple asset classes, ensuring tailored reporting and compliance with industry-specific accounting standards (e.g., hospitality revenue recognition, industrial lease accounting).
  • Develop, implement, and monitor a strong system of internal controls and financial policies across the organization.
  • Lead risk assessment efforts and ensure proper safeguards are in place to protect company assets and investor interests.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing accounting team.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accuracy, accountability, and ethical behavior.
  • Systems & Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and implement financial systems to streamline accounting operations and enhance data integrity.
  • Lead automation initiatives and system upgrades to support business growth and scalability.
  • Qualifications :

  • CPA required; MBA or Master’s in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Deep expertise in real estate development accounting, Private Equity accounting, and real estate asset classes.
  • Proven track record managing accounting functions for complex development projects and investment portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and tax structuring.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with financial systems (e.g., Yardi, MRI, Sage Intacct, or similar) preferred
