Duties Description NY State Senator Liz Krueger is seeking a Community Liaison / Legislative Aide to work in her district office in Manhattan. This staff member will play a crucial role helping constituents navigate government agencies and benefits, strengthening relationships with community organizations, and supporting the office’s legislative work.
In this dynamic role, you will :
- Provide direct assistance to constituents facing obstacles navigating government agencies and services, with a particular focus on housing and public benefits issues.
- Manage a caseload of constituent cases, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution of inquiries and concerns. Keep detailed records of interactions, recognize trends, and help identify the need for potential legislative responses.
- Serve as a liaison to community organizations and advise on responses to local issues. This will include attending monthly community board meetings and other local events on behalf of the senator. Some evening work will be required.
- Develop relationships with community leaders, local organizations, and other government offices in order to help address constituent and community needs.
- Draft correspondence to constituents, government agencies, and other entities.
- Conduct research on legislative and community issues and help develop new legislation as needed.
- Collaborate with other staff members to organize community events and connect constituents to government and nonprofit resources.
Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you will have :
A very strong desire to advocate for constituents, the ability to develop relationships with a variety of stakeholders and enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team.Previous experience in constituent services, social services, advocacy, or community organizing is strongly preferred.Familiarity with New York housing and / or public benefit issues is highly beneficial. Bonus points if you have experience working with tenants and / or older adults.Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the capacity to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.Comfort with a public-facing position and public speaking.Demonstrated ability to respond to people in challenging situations with professionalism and empathy.Knowledge of New York City and State government preferred. Familiarity with the 28th State Senate District is helpful.College degree required.
