Medical Laboratory Technician

Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY :

Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease as part of the on the job clinical experience for the MLT or MLS career ladder.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

1. Knowledge gained as a Specimen Processing Technician 2 of clinical laboratory equipment / instrumentation, test procedures and standards.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Skill gained during on the job clinical training in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.

4. Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.

5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

6. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and engage critical thinking skills.

7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

8. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required or has earned a Bachelors degree in a chemical, physical or biological science meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for MLT certification and with the 2 years of required clinical experience for ASCP certification. ASCP certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
