The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 1 : 4 or 1 : 5. Unit staffing includes a secretary every day and PRN techs. Equipment used in the unit includes PD Cyclers, Welch Allyn Vital Signs Carts, Hoyer Lifts, Broda Chairs, and Alaris IV Pumps. Documentation is done through a Meditech system. The scheduling requirements include four weekend shifts in a four-week block. Staff may be required to float to other areas as needed. Patient experience focuses on bedside shift reporting, safety checks every 1-2 hours, and effective communication and responsiveness. Responsibilities include performing basic patient assessments and general care. Care may involve managing wounds, tracheostomies, ostomies, drains, chest tubes, strokes, and seizures. Patients may occasionally require dialysis or PCA pumps, with heparin as the only drip medication. Post-operative procedures on the unit include amputations, ostomies, drain placements, chest tube management, oral surgeries, and wound vacs. The dress code requires navy, blue, white, black, gray, or celeste blue scrubs. Unit guidelines include HAI prevention, CVC and Foley monitoring with standard precautions, and fall prevention protocols. All staff are expected to adhere to medication scanning procedures, including controlled substances. Attendance is required per policy, and teamwork is emphasized within the unit culture. Leaders and charge nurses are supportive and experienced, facilitating a smooth orientation process. Each candidate is treated as core staff and is held to the same level of accountability for their work.
