Job description

A Brief Overview

Assists laboratory staff in routine tests used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs phlebotomy on adults and children (venipuncture, finger and heel stick), handles all specimen processing, instructs patients on specimen collection, distributes lab reports, processes lab charges, handles telephone calls, and performs clerical duties as needed. In addition to the above : logs in and processes urine samples, CBC's, Sedrates, Rapid Streps, and serology specimens (with supervision); plates bacteriology cultures; keeps inventory and orders supplies as needed; trains new laboratory assistants.

What you will do

  • Testing and Patient Care :
  • Performs phlebotomy on adults and children (venipuncture, finger and heel stick).
  • Assists with receiving, logging, and collecting specimens. Prepares specimens for testing.
  • Assists with identification and labeling of specimens. Stores and distributes specimens.
  • Instructs patients on proper specimen collection.
  • Clerical Duties :
  • Distributes lab, doctor and chart copies in a timely manner.
  • Files pending laboratory request forms and purges file when necessary.
  • Answers telephones, takes messages and provides routine laboratory information.
  • Adheres fully to corporate policies governing voicemail, PC and network access as well as those protecting the privacy of Bay Valley patients.
  • Supply Inventory and Maintenance :
  • Performs simple daily maintenance on laboratory equipment; takes and record temperatures.
  • Test timers for accuracy.
  • Checks inventory of supplies and stocks incoming supplies; stocks drawing stations and fills pipet bins.
  • Empties biohazard waste into designated containers and prepares waste for pick-up.
  • Files completed laboratory reports, processes charges, reviews bills for accuracy and purges files.
  • Training and Development :
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs.
  • All other duties as assigned including department-specific functions and responsibilities :
  • Performs other duties as assigned and participates in organization projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to safety, P4P’s (if applicable), HIPAA and compliance policies.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Post-high school completion of a technical institute accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant diploma program.
  • Experience Qualifications

  • Two (2) to three (3) years pf phlebotomist, certified medical assistant or EMT recent work experience.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Verbal and written communication skills demonstrate courtesy, compassion and helpfulness in a professional manner towards employees, patients and patient families.
  • Computer skills to include keyboarding, mouse movement and computer data entry skills to enter patient information.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology / anatomy and EMR systems.
  • Ability to work with others in a flexible, cooperative and collaborative manner.
  • Requires concentration to handle varying procedures and interruptions.

    Base Pay Scale : Generally starting at $24.30 - $30.99 per hour

    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
