Professional Development Specialist Nursing Education
The Professional Development Specialist advances nursing practice through evidence-based education simulation and staff development initiatives. This hospital-based role integrates clinical expertise with educational leadership to enhance patient safety staff competency and interdisciplinary collaboration. Regular interaction occurs in ICU cardiac care units and simulation lab settings with occasional evening or weekend hours to support simulation activities and staff education.
Key Responsibilities
Education & Mentorship
Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship for nursing staff in Adult Medical-Surgical Critical Care and Cardiac Nursing.
Strengthen clinical reasoning patient care planning and evidence-based practice skills with emphasis on complex cardiac populations.
Cardiac Clinical Expertise
Deliver advanced education and bedside support for nurses caring for patients with ventricular assist devices (VADs) pulmonary artery (PA) lines intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Support staff in the management of advanced heart failure postheart and lung transplant patients and high-risk cardiac surgical populations.
Provide training in hemodynamic monitoring arrhythmia recognition and pharmacologic management of acute coronary syndromes and advanced heart failure therapies.
Lead case-based discussions on cardiac emergencies such as cardiogenic shock post-operative complications and rapid response scenarios.
Collaborate with cardiology and cardiac surgery teams to integrate the latest evidence-based practices into nursing education.
Simulation Leadership
Design and facilitate multidisciplinary simulation activities for critical care and cardiac nursing teams.
Lead structured debriefings using training from the Center for Medical Simulations Gateway to Debriefing course.
Implement in-situ simulation in ICU and cardiac care settings to enhance emergency management and communication skills among nursing staff.
Clinical Practice Integration
Deliver patient- and family-centered care for high-risk surgical cardiac and critical care populations.
Demonstrate competency in advanced interventions including Continuous Veno-Venous Hemofiltration (CVVH) and complex cardiac device management.
Staff Development & Orientation
Mentor and orient new nursing staff fostering clinical confidence professional growth and safe practice.
Develop and deliver lectures discussions and educational materials on complex cardiac and critical care topics.
Create and maintain a Nursing Orientation Manual in collaboration with nursing leadership.
Design and implement an evidence-based Preceptor Guide to standardize orientation and preceptor practices.
Adaptability
Learn and adapt to the unique patient population served by Mass Eye and Ear including specialized surgical and critical care needs.
Qualifications
Per diem days with rotation to weekends.
Minimum two years RN experience required.
Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) preferred.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
Experience with advanced cardiac devices and therapies
(VADs ECMO IABP PA lines) preferred.
Strong background in adult critical care and cardiac nursing education preferred.

Responsible for developing coordinating and delivering orientation and training programs for all nursing staff and healthcare professionals. Identify areas for educational and professional development of current staff and implement appropriate learning experiences.
Essential Functions
Develop and revise nursing education curricula courses and learning materials based on evidence-based practices and industry standards.
Plan deliver and evaluate educational sessions workshops and courses for nursing and other healthcare professionals.
Conduct clinical competency assessments to evaluate the knowledge skills and performance of nursing staff.
Coordinate preceptorship and mentorship programs for novice nurses and students ensuring a supportive and effective learning experience.
Assess the learning needs of nursing staff and develop or recommend continuing education programs to enhance their professional growth.
Maintain accurate records of educational programs attendance and learner outcomes.
