Youth Outreach Specialist

The New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) works every day to implement the citys Human Rights Law through enforcement education and outreach. The Commission seeks to address historic and contemporary inequities to cultivate a city where everyone can live work and thrive free from discrimination.

Through training education and policy initiatives the Commission aims to root out discrimination. The Commission proactively identifies patterns of discrimination through testing employers housing providers and providers of public accommodation. The Commission also uses investigations litigation and other enforcement tools to address allegations of discrimination.

The Commission seeks to hire a highly motivated and dynamic Youth Outreach Specialist. The ideal candidate will have expertise and knowledge about engagement with diverse youth communities within New York City and a proven track record of creating unique strategies for conducting outreach across NYC to advance our mission.

Key Responsibilities :

• Reporting to the Director of Youth Initiatives the candidate will plan implement coordinate and monitor proactive outreaches focused on youth under the Youth for Equity and Solidarity (YES Initiative).
• Leads Youth for Equity and Solidarity (YES) Council engagement and activities throughout the year.
• Helps advise develop and implement restorative practices-based curriculum and activities for youth.
• Prepares reports conducts analyses and creates strategic outreach plans.
• Provides technical assistance and training to communities; facilitates workshops and trainings on the New York City Human Rights Law for schools and after-school programs youth groups community-based organizations faith-based organizations and other entities to promote the Commissions mandate including providing support to general outreaches in Queens.
• Conducts intakes for potential discrimination inquiries from the members of the public.
• Attend a variety of public meetings local neighborhood community projects community / cultural celebrations and community events.
• Prepare and submit reports and forms in accordance with agency reporting requirements.
• Enter update and retrieve information on an electronic information storage system to facilitate agency operations.
• Performs all other duties as needed within the civil service title to advance the work of the agency.

NOTE : THE SCHEDULE FOR THIS POSITION IS TUESDAY TO SATURDAY 11 : 00A.M. TO 7 : 00 P.M. CANDIDATES MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK EVENING AND / OR ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY TO SUPPORT THE DUTIES OF THE POSITION AND EXPECTED TO TRAVEL TO ALL FIVE BOROUGHS TO CONDUCT OUTREACH AS NEEDED.

Qualifications :

Qualification Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus two years of satisfactory full- time experience in intergroup relations#; community relations; civil rights law enforcement; block or tenant organizing; investigations related to law enforcement; labor or industrial relations; education; social work; or law; or

2. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of experience as described under 1 above; or

3. Education and / or experience equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and must possess at least one year of experience described under 1 above.

# Intergroup relations is defined as experience in which the employees major responsibility is to facilitate communication and cooperation and mediate tensions between different groups.
