Assistant Plant Engineer

City of Vernon – Public Utilities Department – Full-time vacancy – Monthly salary $8,299–$10,088 plus benefits.

Under general supervision, prepare engineering reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends; discuss findings with the plant engineer. Assist with regulatory inspections, testing, and reporting; recommend improvements for equipment efficiency and operational longevity. Provide additional support for all environmental compliance items. Assist with reviews and development of engineering changes to the power plant.

Essential Duties

• Assist with managing permits and inspections
• Assist with outage and maintenance planning
• Support managing third-party testing, calibrations and maintenance activities
• Assist in organizing and updating plant technical documentation
• Assist in reviewing preventive maintenance programs in coordination with maintenance and engineering
• Assist in purchasing urgent critical plant components and equipment
• Review equipment inspections and testing reports; track recommended improvements and corrective actions
• Assist in preparing financial justification for proposed changes to plant configuration
• Assist in managing a variety of projects
• Perform required regulatory reporting to government entities, as assigned by Plant Engineer
• Assist with updating operating procedures and troubleshoot operational issues
• Develop or aid in development of rules and procedures to safely operate facilities; develop or aid maintenance, human performance, and operations best practices
• Support contract reviews, vendor qualifications and vendor management
• Respond to emergency calls for service to inspect affected equipment to identify a root cause of failure, repair impacted equipment, protect public and personnel safety and efficiently restore service
• Provide input for critical system equipment lock-out-tag-out procedures to safely conduct maintenance, testing, repair and overhaul of equipment or systems
• Promote a safety conscious work environment by closely following City, State and industry established general, electrical and plant operating procedures, subscribing to industry best practices, and complying with regulatory requirements
• Support the relationship between the City of Vernon and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; perform other duties as required or assigned

Education, Training & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field; and five (5) years of experience in specialized and technical engineering, repair, and maintenance of systems and equipment.

Licensing & Certification

Valid class C California State Driver's License required. Engineer in Training (EIT) certification highly desired.
