This position is for a medical surgical unit. The unit monitors patients on telemetry. Common diagnoses include stroke, COPD, respiratory issues, GI bleed, renal failure, electrolyte imbalance, altered mental status, weakness, and non-operable fractures. This is a non-surgical unit. Patient ratios are approximately 1 : 4-5 during the day and 1 : 5-6 at night for RNs, and 1 : 10 for CNAs. Ratios may vary based on patient acuity and support. Charge nurse will not typically have a patient assignment. Support on the unit includes a house supervisor and RT staff available 24 / 7. This position may require floating to other areas with Med / Tele patients. Nurses must have skills in managing cardiac drips, insulin drips, and heparin drips. CNA duties include obtaining vital signs, patient ambulation, turning patients every two hours, and good communication skills. Weekend rotation and holiday expectations will apply.
