Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee
This position is a supervised on-the-job training in the operation of mechanical tools and light to heavy equipment used to maintain highways, rights-of-way, roads, facility grounds and related areas. Assignments are selected to provide sequential experience in practical applications of training that have been provided in controlled settings through activities such as repairs, resurfacing, mowing, and snow and ice control. The work that is assigned will begin with closely supervised, specific routine tasks and will progress in difficulty and independence of performance until equal to the tasks that are considered full-performance Highway Maintenance work. All work of this position is essential to maintain KDOT facilities as nearly as possible to original as build conditions in a safe and efficient manner.
The supervisor of this position is the Highway Maintenance Assistant Supervisor, who assigns work, gives directions, answers questions, and is directly in charge. There will be little latitude in this position. Work is reviewed in depth by the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, Highway Maint Asst Supervisor, or lead worker of the work unit for each assigned task. Employees will receive training and close supervision in all new procedures that are expected to be performed using a wide range of equipment; supervision will be close. The maintenance manual, signing manual, and flagging manual are used for direction in performance of duties. Instructions will be explicit until the employee becomes proficient and is competent to perform the work with only general direction.
