Job description

Job Summary

Title : Speech-Language Pathologist

Supervisor : Principal and / or Special Education Coordinator

Start Date : TBD

Salary : CCBOE Salary Schedule

FLSA Status : Exempt

Job Goals :

  • To provide appropriate services to communicatively disabled students (those with language, speech, or hearing disorders) in the school system.
  • To provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators and staff to support academic achievement and school success for all students.
  • To serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community, and the school system.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Possess and maintain certification as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education and the American Speech and Hearing Association. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in speech language pathology.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and / or certification / licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students and develop methodologies and strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce / submit required reports, correspondence, and / or financial information.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school system staff to ensure the effective implementation of IEPs for designated students.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
  • Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Organizes and conducts language and speech screenings in the schools.
  • Organizes and conducts hearing screenings in the schools.
  • Evaluates and diagnoses children with speech and language disorders through use of standardized tests.
  • Selects children with clinical communicative disorders for enrollment in therapy.
  • Consults with principals and teachers regarding the arrangement of appropriate time schedules for children to be enrolled in therapy.
  • Coordinates the Language, Speech and Hearing Services Program with other school programs.
  • Prescribes and implements therapy for those children with communicative disorders.
  • Provides individual and / or group therapy for children with language, speech, or hearing disorders.
  • Refers students to other school personnel for special services.
  • Participates as needed in IEP development, implementation, and meetings.
  • Refers students, when necessary, to various community agencies and physicians.
  • Provides information to teachers about pupil progress in therapy.
  • Provides consultative services to regular or special classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and parents in order to give them information on communicative skills development, special materials, and procedures to be used in helping children develop appropriate communicative behaviors.
  • Suggests materials for planning programs in speech improvement in the classroom.
  • Maintains appropriate records regarding children's progress in therapy.
  • Maintains records and medical information regarding children with hearing impairments in order to convey the needs of the child to the classroom teacher.
  • Conducts parent conferences.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school / workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in indemnifying potential problems and / or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Works cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system's vision, goals, and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame.
  • Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding student / school / workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and / or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors students in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representatives groups as required.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies and state, federal and local laws.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures; prepares for substitutes according to Board policies and school procedures.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
  • Terms of Employment / Salary : As established by the Board and applicable state law.

    Evaluation : Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
