Job Description

About SHP

At SHP, we design more than just buildings - we create experiences that inspire people to learn, work, and connect. With a legacy that spans over 120 years, SHP is a nationally recognized architecture and engineering firm committed to shaping environments that positively impact communities and improve lives.

Our work is driven by purpose, fueled by curiosity, and built on collaboration. From visionary schools and innovative workplaces to civic and cultural spaces, we approach every project with creativity, technical excellence, and a deep commitment to sustainability and inclusion.

We're proud to offer a workplace culture that values people as much as process. At SHP, you'll find a team that supports your growth, challenges your thinking, and celebrates your contributions. Whether you're designing, engineering, managing, or supporting our projects, your work will matter - and so will you.

Join us, and help shape what's next.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Interior Designer at SHP, you'll provide design leadership across multiple complex projects, shaping interior environments that are thoughtful, functional, and deeply connected to architectural intent. This role is designed for an experienced designer who brings confidence, clarity, strong design judgment, and who enjoys mentoring others while elevating the quality and consistency of interior design work.

You'll lead interior design efforts from early concept through construction, balancing creativity with technical rigor, client needs, and project constraints. In close partnership with Project Architects, Project Managers, and firm leadership, you'll help deliver cohesive, high-quality environments that enhance user experience and support SHP's commitment to impactful design.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of design excellence, collaboration, and people leadership and who wants to make a lasting impact on both projects and the interior design practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage interior design scope across multiple projects, typically varying in size and complexity.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients on interior design matters, ensuring alignment, responsiveness, and trust.
  • Partner closely with Project Architects and Project Managers to integrate interior and architectural design intent, execution, and delivery.
  • Lead interior design development with the project team from programming and concept design through construction administration.
  • Guide space planning, material selection, finishes, furnishings, and color palettes with attention to performance, durability, and user experience.
  • Coordinate with consultants, vendors, and manufacturers to support integrated and buildable interior solutions.
  • Mentor and support Interior Designers and emerging professionals through coaching, delegation, and design feedback.
  • Contribute to firmwide interior design standards, tools, libraries, and best practices.
  • Support business development efforts, including pursuits, interviews, and client presentations as needed.

Key Requirements

Experience

  • Extensive experience leading integrated design projects within an architecture or A/E firm.
  • Demonstrated success leading interior design efforts on complex projects, ideally within education, civic, workplace, or institutional markets.
  • Proven ability to carry projects through all phases, from concept through construction administration.

Design & Technical Expertise

  • Strong understanding of space planning, building systems coordination, and interior detailing.
  • Proficiency in Revit and familiarity with specifications and FF&E processes.
  • Knowledge of codes, accessibility requirements, and material performance standards.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Ability to lead design teams while remaining engaged in hands-on design work.
  • Experience mentoring others and fostering a collaborative, inclusive studio culture.
  • Strong design judgment, with the ability to balance creativity and constructability.

Communication & Decisioning

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable leading client presentations, facilitating design discussions, and resolving challenges.
  • Collaborative, composed under pressure, and solutions-focused.

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture from an accredited program required.
  • NCIDQ certification required.
  • LEED accreditation or familiarity with sustainable design practices is a plus.

Location & Travel Expectations

This role is based in one of our physical office locations-Cincinnati, OH; Columbus, OH; or Greensboro, NC-and is ideal for candidates who thrive in a highly collaborative, in person environment. Being onsite allows for deeper day to day engagement with peers and project teams, faster decision making, and organic moments of creativity and mentorship that emerge through shared space.

At the same time, many of our most meaningful opportunities-client-facing and internal-happen beyond the walls of the office. Travel is a key part of how we build relationships, gather insight from the people we design for, and bring our ideas to life alongside clients and partners. Whether it's participating in discovery sessions, facilitating workshops, or gaining on the ground understanding of a project's context, travel enables us to show up where it matters.

Candidates for this role should be willing and able to travel as needed, often with short notice, to support firmwide priorities, strengthen client connections, and grow their impact across markets. We view this flexibility as a way to expand visibility, build trust, and access the kind of hands-on experiences that fuel career growth.

SHP is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
