The University of Tennessee at Martin is a primary regional university in the University of Tennessee System that includes the main campus and six regional centers located throughout west and central Tennessee. UT Martin is a comprehensive campus with five colleges offering more than 100 academic areas of study within 18 undergraduate degree programs. The campus also offers seven graduate degrees within 17 specialized concentrations. Focused on providing access to higher education, UT Martin has more off-campus centers than any public four-year university in the state and is the UT System’s largest provider of online education. UT Martin has created partnerships with other universities in Tennessee to provide roadmaps to professional degree programs, such as law and veterinary medicine at UT Knoxville, pharmacy at the UT Health Science Center in Memphis, and public service at Lipscomb University. UT Martin has also partnered with three Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology to develop 1+3 programs in three areas of study.

The Opportunity

UT Martin invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean with the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The College of Engineering and Natural Sciences consists of five departments : Engineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics and Statistics. The Dean serves as the chief academic officer of the college and will provide innovative, strategic, and visionary leadership that fosters a dynamic, student-centered learning environment.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean will provide strategic academic leadership for the college. Position responsibilities include, but not limited to the following :

  • Developing initiatives, in collaboration with the college’s faculty and staff, to enhance academic offerings and respond to new opportunities in west Tennessee
  • Creating an environment that fosters the principles of inclusion and engagement for faculty, staff, students, and those external to the college and university
  • Leading budget planning and resource development
  • Participating in fundraising activities and grant development
  • Communicating and collaborating with the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs on the operation of the college
  • Overseeing the recruitment, selection, and orientation of college department heads, faculty, and staff members
  • Supervising and evaluating department heads and administrative staff
  • Ensuring quality of instruction by recruiting and retaining high-quality faculty, evaluating performance, and identifying and meeting their professional development needs
  • Overseeing assessment plans for general education core competencies and student learning outcomes
  • Supporting continued compliance with all SACSCOC accreditation
  • Assisting with development of innovative academic and co-curricular programs
  • Enhancing partnerships with external entities, including business and industry, school systems, community groups, and other state agencies that support the mission of the university
  • Representing the college and its programs at a variety of meetings, public events, or other related engagements

Qualifications

Qualifications :

An earned Ph.D. or terminal degree and previous experience in academic administration or a leadership position are required. The dean will bring a strong record of teaching and scholarly achievement in one of the areas represented by the college and should have evidence of scholarly or creative accomplishments to justify a tenure-track appointment at the rank of full professor.

The successful candidate must understand the opportunities and challenges facing a public university and possess the skills, leadership, and vision to advance the college. Significant and demonstrated experience in solving a variety of fiscal budgetary, personnel, and management problems in a rapidly changing environment is needed. Demonstrated experience with the assessment of student learning and faculty development and experience working with underrepresented faculty, staff and students is required.
