SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Director of Outdoor Experience & Property provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight for all council facilities, outdoor programs and camps. This role integrates property management and outdoor program delivery to ensure Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont properties are safe, functional, welcoming and mission-aligned spaces that support exceptional experiences for girls, volunteers and staff. The Director develops and manages long- and short-term property and outdoor experience plans, leads related staff teams, and ensures financial sustainability, compliance and innovation across all sites and programs. They work as a member of the Mission Delivery team in partnership with the Director of Marketing, Director of Engagement and the Director of Girl Scout Experience to support membership recruitment and retention efforts through effective administration of outdoor programs in support of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and council business needs.

ACCOUNTABILITIES :

Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive property management plan for all council facilities, including maintenance schedules, budgeting, capital planning and risk management.
  • Lead strategic and operational planning for both property and outdoor experience departments, ensuring alignment with council goals and Girl Scout mission delivery.
  • Create and maintain systems to track progress on property improvements, outdoor program initiatives and long-term growth and use plans.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on council properties and outdoor programming, providing regular updates and recommendations to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as a key member of the council Leadership Team.

Property & Facilities Management

  • Oversee all council-owned and leased properties, ensuring compliance with GSUSA, ACA and all local, state and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Hire, train, support and evaluate a team of property staff, including rangers and caretakers, responsible for maintenance, repairs and daily operations.
  • Manage property work order and inventory systems and ensure effective staff use and training.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with contractors, vendors and service providers for major repairs, capital projects and ongoing maintenance.
  • Implement standardized processes for soliciting bids, selecting vendors and managing completion of all property projects exceeding council thresholds.
  • Partner with executives at service centers to address facility needs and ensure safe, functional and welcoming office environments.
  • Provide support and leadership to board and operational committees for long term property planning.
  • Outdoor Experience & Program Leadership

  • Provide leadership, direction and development to the Outdoor Experience team responsible for camp operations, outdoor programs including summer camp, and community partnerships.
  • Ensure delivery of safe, high-quality outdoor programming, including summer camp, weekend troop camping, council-sponsored outdoor events and partner-led experiences.
  • Develop and oversee a long-range growth and innovation plan for outdoor programming that honors Girl Scout traditions while meeting contemporary needs of members.
  • Monitor and achieve annual goals related to attendance, program participation, financial targets and user satisfaction.
  • Ensure all outdoor programs and facilities meet ACA accreditation standards, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and all applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Budgeting & Financial Management

  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets for both property operations and outdoor experience departments.
  • Monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving measures and ensure adherence to approved budgets.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Fund Development to identify funding opportunities and oversee implementation and reporting for funded initiatives.
  • Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with the Director of Engagement to align property and outdoor experience efforts with membership growth and retention strategies.
  • Work closely with the Marketing team to develop promotional campaigns highlighting camp and outdoor opportunities.
  • Maintain strong internal and external communication to ensure alignment of property, program and mission priorities.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration between property management and outdoor experience functions.

  • Advance the council’s diversity, equity, inclusion and access goals by ensuring all facilities and programs are welcoming, inclusive and accessible.

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, outdoor resource management, facilities management or a combination of education and directly related experience required.
  • At least five years progressively responsible experience managing outdoor program and property, including camp operation and development and implementation of maintenance program, preferably in a programmatic setting.
  • Three or more years demonstrated experience in managing staff to achieve results / targets through goals and accountability, budget administration, maintenance schedules and program management experience. Experience supervising year-round, full-time staff is strongly preferred.
  • Non-profit program and / or property management is strongly preferred.
  • Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with and knowledge of youth programming and outdoor education standards, program and systems, ACA standards, health and safety standards and laws, building codes and other federal, state and local regulations regarding properties and facilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of outdoor / camp program development and management and a passion to ensure that the largest number of girls are exposed to quality, safe, fun, educational and unique experiences in the out-of-doors.
  • Customer relations experience and a demonstrated commitment to maintaining a high customer service focus for all internal and external customers (staff, volunteers, families).
  • Superior time management and organizational skills with ability to carry out a variety of responsibilities with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervision and setting goals with measurable accountabilities.
  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently in stressful situations; excellent customer service skills; detail and deadline oriented; self-sufficient.

  • Willingness and ability to work varied hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Additional Requirements

  • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become and remain registered member of GSUSA, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.
  • Successfully pass criminal and driver background investigation.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license, valid auto insurance, acceptable driving record and access to a vehicle on a daily basis and willingness and ability to travel through the council’s geographic area.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls including the operation of computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine and other office equipment; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; bend and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear within normal range for telephone use. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 35 pounds. The employee must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal, preparing and analyzing data and figures, and extensive reading.
