Job Description

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Traffic Sign Installer to join our team. In this role, you will install, maintain and repair transportation signage in accordance with national standards in the City of Raleigh.

The Traffic Engineering Group at the City of Raleigh is dedicated to creating a safe, efficient, and accessible transportation network for all residents and visitors. This team specializes in the fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and the collection of critical traffic data to guide decision-making. By combining technical expertise and a commitment to service, the group plays a vital role in improving mobility and safety across the city's growing transportation network.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives, prioritizes and responds to work orders; reviews schedule, routes and coordinates activities with other departments, as needed
  • Determines, gathers and prepares required equipment and supplies for maintenance work requests; checks equipment for operability, safety and any required maintenance; cleans and loads equipment and supplies
  • Sets up safe work zones including warning / safety signs, cones and / or flags in accordance with regulations
  • Performs maintenance tasks which may include : installing and repairing signs; replacing faded signs
  • Performs inspections to ensure proper maintenance and placement of signs and monitoring intersections for visual obstructions; addresses issues and / or notifies appropriate resource for further action
  • Maintains and cleans equipment and work spaces; ensures compliance with safety policies and procedures
  • This position will require the operation of a City-owned vehicle in order to regularly drive to various work sites for installations and repairs

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience :

High School Diploma or GED and one year of related experience

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications :

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Additional Information

  • ADA and Other Requirements :

    Positions in this class typically require : stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

    Medium Work :

    Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Working Conditions :

    Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
