Perioperative Registered Nurse

Overview

The perioperative nurse is a non-sterile member of the surgical team. They are responsible for providing assistance to the surgical team and to the anesthesia provider using a good working knowledge of the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs in performing the procedure. The perioperative nurse will also assist in the providers clinics to include consults, post-operative appointments, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - SURGICAL DUTIES

1. Participates in ensuring correct patient, correct surgical site, and intervention.

2. Participates in intraoperative nurse charting including time in and time out of surgery.

3. Circulates, assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, devices and supplies to the surgical team, in addition to anticipating the needs of the surgical team throughout the procedure.

4. Evaluation and implementation of standing orders / protocols as needed based on patients status

5. Administration of conscious sedation medications and other IV medications as ordered with MD oversight.

6. Assist with turning over and setting up procedure room, sterilizes surgical equipment and prepares for procedures as needed.

7. Documentation of procedural process

8. Dispenses appropriate oral and injectable medications as directed by physician and anesthesia.

9. Provides work guidance, support and instruction to peers and other staff members.

10. Monitors all clinical activities related to patient procedures.

11. Monitors and oversees the flow of procedures and room turnover. Ensures procedure room is maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner.

12. Communicates with the MD regarding flow of cases, add-on cases, delays, and / or cancellations.

13. Performs all duties related to medical instrument cleaning and sterilization of equipment.

14. Cleaning of the operating room.

15. Checks work order for all equipment.

16. Opening of sterile packs, instruments and supplies, assuring that a sterile environment is maintained throughout the procedure

17. Maintains a safe environment for treating the surgical patient, including safeguards to protect the patient from cross infection.

18. Checking and supplying operating room at the end of the scheduled cases.

19. Assists in organizing supplies and equipment.

20. Assists in inventory management.

21. All other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - CLINIC DUTIES

22. Ensures the OR is prepared for surgery.

23. Escorts patients to exam rooms in order of appointment times. Obtains short history and vital signs as required by patient's chief complaint. Obtains or updates medication list if necessary. Sets up exam room according to scheduled procedure or anticipate physicians needs if non-scheduled procedure is likely.

24. Escorts patients to Operating Room

25. Responsible for all pre-op and post-op photography

26. Educates patient, as required, after physician establishes the treatment plan. Ensures that the patient understands the treatment plan, understands the proper use of their medications, and understands their responsibility for compliance with the treatment plan prior to leaving the office.

27. Responds professionally with appropriate empathy to current and prospective patient inquires via email and telephone, as appropriate

28. Straightens and cleans exam rooms after patient visits

29. Performs nursing procedures such as suture removal and dressing changes without direct physician supervision

30. Assist during clinic procedures

31. Completely and correctly fills out all required pathology and laboratory requisition documents for patients as required by physician

32. All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION

1. RN or BSN degree from an accredited school of nursing required.

2. State specific RN license required

3. 1-2 years of recent experience in a medical office in a similar capacity preferred.

4. Maintains BLS Certification.

5. Basic computer knowledge.

6. Able to operate standard office equipment.

13. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

1. Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment.

4. Ability to sit for large portions of a workday.
