DEFINITION
This position falls within the Career and Technical Education (CTE) discipline specifically Cosmetology under the Human Services career cluster. Teaching and learning occur in a classroom / laboratory setting offsite for work-based learning and may include virtual or hybrid instruction.
The cosmetology program integrates academic and technical content while providing real-world experiences. The instructor ensures all instruction and operations comply with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) competencies for Cosmetology (19101).
The instructor designs and delivers rigorous relevant and engaging educational experiences that prepare students for state licensure and support their college career and civic readiness. The instructor also serves as a mentor guiding students in developing technical expertise customer service skills professionalism and workplace ethics consistent with industry standards.
SUPERVISION
Reports to the Norfolk Technical Center Site Coordinator and Career and Technical Education (CTE) administrators.
NATURE OF THE POSITION / DUTIES
- Teach skills knowledge standards and competencies for cosmetology courses using curricula approved by the school division VDOE and related industry or accrediting organizations.
- Plan and implement instruction that includes lectures demonstrations project-based learning and hands-on experiences in theory and laboratory settings. Ensure instruction aligns with current industry practices and leads to student licensure and credentialing opportunities.
- Instruct students in the safe and proper use of tools equipment and materials used in the cosmetology profession.
- Model professional salon behavior client relations and adherence to sanitation and safety regulations.
- Supervise students in clinical practice community service and SkillsUSA activities including local state and national competitions.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians providing opportunities for involvement in the program. Collaborate with school staff and counselors to support student success.
- Build partnerships with area salons spas barbershops beauty suppliers and postsecondary institutions. Lead an advisory committee and collaborate with administration to expand work-based learning opportunities.
- Create an inclusive classroom and laboratory environment that promotes respect engagement and collaboration. Work with colleagues and administrators to maintain a professional supportive school culture.
- Participate in professional development to stay current with industry trends techniques and regulations. Contribute to program and committee initiatives at the local and state levels.
- Maintain accurate student records attendance and performance data in compliance with VDOE and school division requirements.
- Maintain current knowledge of Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology testing standards procedures and licensure requirements and inform the NTC administration and CTE department of updates or changes.
- Support student success by providing individualized feedback career guidance and ongoing assistance toward program completion and licensure.
MINIMUM EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors degree in a related field preferred.Minimum of three years of professional experience in cosmetology.Valid Virginia Cosmetology License and eligibility for or possession of a VDOE teaching license in Cosmetology.In-depth knowledge of cosmetology theory practical skills and current industry standards.Knowledge of effective teaching methodologies and ability to facilitate learning in in-person hybrid and virtual formats.Experience working effectively with diverse student populations.Ability to take initiative and complete program-related tasks reports and documentation accurately and independently.Understanding of secondary student development and ability to support both academic and technical growth.Knowledge of assessment strategies industry certifications and state licensure requirements.Excellent verbal written and interpersonal communication skills to engage students parents colleagues and industry partners.Strong interpersonal abilities that foster collaboration teamwork and a positive learning environment with the capacity to present content clearly and professionally.Proficiency with technology instructional software and cosmetology-related tools and equipment.PHYSICAL EFFORT
Requires frequent standing bending walking stooping and lifting while demonstrating and supervising cosmetology procedures in classroom and laboratory environments.
HAZARDS
Exposure to normal risks associated with a cosmetology lab environment including chemicals electrical tools and equipment.
UNUSUAL DEMANDS
Work occurs primarily in classroom and laboratory settings with some offsite supervision for work-based learning. Occasional travel may be required for professional development and student events. Instruction may occur in in-person hybrid or virtual formats as needed.
