Overview :

ALK Asphalt LLC, a rapidly growing commercial asphalt contractor, is seeking a detail-oriented Cost Accounting Clerk to join our team. This role is essential in supporting financial operations, ensuring accurate job cost tracking, and maintaining precise financial records. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills and a background in cost accounting within a construction or contracting environment.

Job Summary

The Costing Clerk plays a critical role in supporting the financial and operational efficiency of the company by accurately tracking, analyzing, and reporting costs related to construction projects and equipment usage. This position ensures that all job and equipment-related expenses are captured, coded correctly, and reported in a timely manner to support project management, job costing analysis, and financial forecasting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, review, and input data related to labor, materials, equipment usage, subcontractors, and other direct job costs into the accounting / job cost system.
  • Monitor and reconcile equipment usage logs, fuel usage, and maintenance costs to ensure accurate tracking against jobs or cost centers.
  • Track and maintain accurate records of material inventory, including aggregates, concrete, oil, and other job-related materials.
  • Coordinate with purchasing, yard personnel, and field supervisors to ensure materials are received, documented, and properly allocated to job cost codes.
  • Conduct periodic physical inventory counts and reconcile discrepancies between physical inventory and system records.
  • Monitor material usage per job and assist in identifying variances or unusual consumption patterns.
  • Assist in the setup of job codes, cost codes, equipment IDs, and material categories in coordination with project managers and accounting staff.
  • Match purchase orders, delivery tickets, and invoices to job cost entries for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and maintain job cost and inventory reports for project managers and accounting leadership on a regular basis.
  • Work closely with project managers and field supervisors to resolve discrepancies in costs, material allocations, or equipment usage.
  • Track and report equipment rental and ownership costs and allocate them properly to jobs.
  • Assist with month-end close by preparing journal entries, reconciliations, job cost accruals, and inventory adjustments.
  • Support internal audits and assist in documentation gathering for external financial reviews or audits.
  • Maintain organized records of job costing, equipment logs, and material inventory in both digital and physical formats.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a construction or job-costing-related role; civil construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 100 Contractor, Viewpoint, QuickBooks, Foundation, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of job costing principles, cost allocation methods, and inventory tracking.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and VLOOKUPs).
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of equipment management systems or fleet tracking software.
  • Understanding of civil construction processes, materials, and equipment.
  • Familiarity with union payroll or prevailing wage compliance (if applicable).
  • Working Conditions

    Office environment with occasional visits to job sites, equipment yards, or material storage locations.

    May require extended hours during month-end or project closeouts.
