Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, Ambulatory, the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Cancer Services (ACMO) involves oversight of medical operations for Cancer Services within the Ambulatory Business Unit, ensuring patients receive the highest quality clinical care. Provides physician leadership for Cancer Services faculty practice(s) and act as liaison between doctors and other healthcare executives. Implements safe, cost-effective, efficient medical interventions and ensures seamless medical care across inpatient units and ambulatory sites. Focused on improving ambulatory access and modernizing operations. Develops and / or facilitates quality measurements for clinical programs; monitors and improves quality and safety metrics. Establishes and monitors compliance with regulations required by external regulatory agencies, state, and other accreditation bodies. Contributes to physician workforce planning and physician recruitment, evaluation and training. Assists the faculty practice(s) in resolving problems and questions of policy as they relate to the medical staff and patient care. Coordinates activities of the faculty practice medical staff, and assures compliance with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.

Division of Time : This position is estimated to be 70% Health Administration and 30% Clinical.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $273,200 - $575,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Health ambulatory clinical enterprise consists of ambulatory operations focused on clinic visits with faculty practice providers (MDs and APPs) and the business unit includes outpatient surgery in ambulatory surgical centers, outpatient cancer infusion care, and outpatient pharmacy operations. There are over 300 unique ambulatory clinics in 5 different locations.

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is an accredited National Cancer Institute (NCI) - Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, recognized for its scientific leadership, extensive resources, and cutting edge research across basic, clinical, and population sciences. With a top-10 ranking from U.S. News & World Report, we provide exceptional cancer care for adults and children through clinical services spanning three San Francisco campuses and five regional satellite locations.

Our multidisciplinary adult cancer services integrate practices from multiple UCSF School of Medicine departments - Medicine, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, OB / GYN, and Orthopedics - alongside hospital-based programs like infusion therapy, social work, and supportive care.

To expand access and meet the needs of the Bay Area community, UCSF Cancer Services is growing its network of affiliate and satellite locations. leveraging innovative models of care. This leadership role ensures seamless alignment of clinical services and workflows, driving consistency and excellence across our expanding cancer enterprise.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration, or clinical degree and or equivalent experience / training
  • 5+ years of progressive management or leadership experience in an academic Medical Center or large healthcare system
  • MD in medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Ability to handle executive management responsibilities in an ambulatory practice
  • Expert knowledge of healthcare delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development
  • Possesses a highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with Medical Center management, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize clinic metrics to drive excellence, support operations, and facilitate integration
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in sensitive situations that may involve public scrutiny
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills and expert negotiation and influencing skills
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organizational goals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, Health Administration or clinical degree
  • Board-certified medical, surgical, or radiation oncologist with experience building best-in-class academic oncology enterprise operations
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments
  • License / Certification

  • MD in medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
