About the Position : The Senior Animal Services Representative performs leadership level of animal care, keeping duties for the department, and facilitates animal services. Provides training and assistance to assigned staff to ensure the safe and humane care of animals and effective delivery of services. This position will require working a varied work shift that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.

What You'll Be Doing Here

The Ideal Candidate :

  • Customer Service Skills : Courteously respond to customer inquiries and provide effective customer service.
  • Administrative Experience : Maintains accurate animal inventory records. Follows oral and written instructions, apply good judgment, and maintains sensitive and confidential information.
  • Animal Handling Knowledge : Safely and humanely handles animals of all sizes. Uses leashes, control sticks, animal traps, cat tongs, and other handling equipment effectively. Familiar with humane euthanasia.

Day in the life consists of :

  • Represent the Animal Services department to the public, providing information on services and assistance offered while participating in the care and upkeep of animals housed in the City shelter.
  • Ensure effective service operations by feeding, watering, exercising, and grooming animals to maintain their health and appearance.
  • Provide support for all animal services and inquiries, guiding and assisting other personnel in handling various animal-related concerns.
  • Clean and repair kennels, stalls, and cages to ensure proper sanitary and safety conditions.

    What You Need to Qualify

    Education and / or Experience :

    High School diploma or G.E.D.

    Three (3) years of animal services management, customer service or other office administrative support experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment :

    A valid California driver's license is required.

    Euthanasia Certificate preferred.

    Knowledge of and Skills in :

  • City procedures and services offered through the department.
  • Methods, practices, and procedures in the restraint, handling, medication, cleaning, and feeding of animals, including the handling and quarantine of unruly or vicious animals.
  • State, county, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to the control, medication, care, and protection of animals.
  • Animal breeds, behaviors, and proper animal handling techniques.
  • Safe and humane methods of animal euthanasia.
  • Processes and techniques for quality customer service.
  • Communicating City services for animal management to various stakeholders.
  • Safely, confidently, and humanely handling and caring for animals of all sizes and temperaments.
  • Learning and following appropriate procedures for administering medications and vaccinations.
  • Awareness of euthanizing animals.
  • Maintaining accurate animal inventory records in a computer system.
  • Observing, assessing, and understanding animal behavior.
  • Physical Requirements and Work Environment :

    The employee frequently works in extreme outside weather conditions and on slippery and uneven surfaces. The employee is often exposed to dangerous, injured, or diseased animals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne articles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and zoonotic and other communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud within confined areas. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to manipulate, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
