War on the Rocks is looking for a detail-oriented content associate who is committed to the clear communication of sophisticated ideas about international security. This is a full-time, entry-level position that is ideal for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in national security.

Please note this is not a remote position. We have a hybrid schedule of three days in the office a week (T, W, Th). As such, we will only consider candidates who live in the Washington, DC metro area or who are willing to relocate there.

The Position

Content associates are responsible for social media, marketing, event organization, and serving our membership community. Associates gain a deep understanding of our audience and authors most of whom are current / former military personnel, civilian national security practitioners, government officials, scholars, or in the defense industry and, by extension, important issues pertaining to national security.

War on the Rocks is focused on growing and serving a community passionate about strategy, defense, and foreign affairs. Founded in 2013, War on the Rocks aims to improve the professional and public discourse on issues of strategic importance by featuring experienced and authoritative voices in articles, essays, and podcasts. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Deep interest in defense and foreign policy issues
  • Exceptional and obsessive attention to detail
  • Ability to deliver against short-term deadlines
  • Elegant written English
  • Patience and rigor
  • Ability to work collegially with others and flexibly as part of a small team
  • Right to work in the United States

If you have these too, that's a bonus :

  • Some form of editorial experience. This does not mean you need to have been employed as an editor, but if you can demonstrate that a formal or informal role you had involved regular wordsmithing, that is a plus
  • Experience running a social media account for an organization in a related industry
