Job Specifications

Major Function :

The City of Tallahassee’s Environmental Services team is seeking a knowledgeable Environmental Biologist. This position is responsible for protecting water quality, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and supporting sustainable stormwater management practices. It offers the opportunity to apply scientific expertise to programs that directly impact environmental protection and public health in our community.

What You Will Do

  • Manage NPDES MS4 programs, including monitoring, outfall identification, HRIF determination, compliance inspections, illicit discharge detection, and training / education initiatives, ensuring all activities are properly documented and reported.
  • Review new NPDES-MS4 permit conditions and update standard operating procedures to maintain compliance with FDEP and EPA regulations.
  • Provide technical oversight for stormwater alum facilities, including water quality and biological sample collection, equipment operation, and data management.
  • Acquire, analyze, and report water quality and biological data from stormwater operations, surface water monitoring programs, and special projects; ensure data is uploaded to EIMS and STORET as required.
  • Assist the Limnologist during water quality sampling events and support Stormwater Management programs through administrative, technical, and scientific tasks.
  • Provide customer service and support to other departments and the public, and participate in planning environmental projects and studies related to stormwater management.

Minimum Training & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the biological or environmental sciences or a related field; AND
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in environmental regulations, environmental management, or environmental planning
  • OR

  • High School diploma or GED; AND
  • Six (6) years of professional experience in environmental regulations, environmental management, or environmental planning
  • Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Class E Florida driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • Salary Range

    $24.1863 to $65.6314 / hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $31.6302 / hour
