Life moves fast on our medical-surgical unit, and you must be prepared to keep up with a constantly changing environment.
Medical / Surgical Nurses provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures.
They also attend to those who are being treated with pharmaceuticals to manage illness.
Due to the broad range of medical conditions Medical / Surgical Nurses encounter, you will quickly amass a broad knowledge base.
You will be able to easily transition into other specialties if you desire.
In addition to excellent nursing skills, medical-surgical nurses need top-notch organizational skills.
You must be able to prioritize multiple tasks.
The unit utilizes computerized charting and Meditech software.
Successful applicants will demonstrate strong critical thinking skills.
RN II applicants independently plan and implement routine nursing care in predictable situations.
They begin to assume leadership responsibility and require minimal supervision.
Advancement from RN I or a minimum of one year of continuous recent experience in a comparable patient care setting is necessary.
RN III applicants plan and implement nursing care while individualizing care as needed.
They manage routine and emergency care without supervision and assume basic leadership responsibilities.
Advancement from RN II or a minimum of three years of current acute care experience, of which two years are in primary unit specialty, is necessary.
The nurse to patient ratio is 6 patients to 1 RN.
Dress code requires wearing your own set of scrubs.
All colors are approved except for royal blue, forest green, and bright red.
Nurses may not work with newborns but may have some pediatric patients.
