Maintenance Worker III

Join our dedicated Facilities Maintenance team as a Maintenance Worker III and make a positive impact on the community of the City of Milpitas. The Maintenance Worker III serves as lead worker over a crew within their assigned area of responsibility to perform a variety of semiskilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities. This is the advanced journey level class in the maintenance worker class series. The Maintenance Worker III is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series by the responsibility assumed by leading a crew and by the performance of the more complex and responsible duties assigned to positions in this series. Incumbents at this level typically possess specialized skills, knowledge and abilities, and work independently.

The ideal candidate is a skilled and dependable professional with experience in public works facilities. They demonstrate strong leadership as a crew lead, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard. They bring hands-on expertise in tasks such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and equipment operation, along with the ability to read blueprints and maintain systems in compliance with health and safety codes. They are proficient in maintaining pools, pumps, filters, and related infrastructure. Known for their reliability, teamwork, and ability to train and guide staff, this candidate excels in both fieldwork and administrative tasks like recordkeeping and coordinating daily operations. They take pride in public service and contribute to the safety, function, and appearance of community facilities and infrastructure.

In addition to the benefits as outlined in the Benefits tab of this job announcement, the selected candidate will be scheduled to work 4, 10-hour days per week, which can allow for a generous work / life balance.

This posting is written notice of a permanent, vacant position. Internal applications will be reviewed on 10 / 09 / 2025, which is 10 working days after the recruitment is posted. If a minimum of three (3) qualified, internal applications are received, those candidates will be considered in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the City and the Milpitas Employees Association. External applicants will not be considered until after the internal applicant review process has concluded.

The current vacancy is within the Facilities Maintenance Section. Duties may include but are not limited to :

  • Serve as lead worker over an assigned crew;
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel;
  • Assist assigned supervisor with daily supervision of personnel and the timely completion of assigned duties;
  • Check work of assigned crew;
  • Maintain timesheets and other records as appropriate;
  • Ensure that safety measures and practices are utilized at all times;
  • Performs a variety of duties at the skilled level to maintain and repair city buildings, structures and their attendant equipment;
  • Duties include carpentry, painting, lock-smith, plumbing, electrical control systems, HVAC systems, read blue prints, build and assemble furnishings;
  • Balance and maintain proper water chemistry;
  • Monitor / adjust filtration equipment;
  • Calibrate chemical probes;
  • Maintain / repair filters, pumps, motors, lines, tanks;
  • Maintain and ensure all aspects of the Civic Center pond and Sports Center pool operations;
  • Meet state and federal health code standards;
  • Provide training and assist the Facilities Supervisor or Public Works Manager in assigning and coordination of work;
  • Requisition of supplies and inspection of work performed by staff and contractors;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of :

  • City policies and procedures related to maintenance.
  • Training and communication techniques, including oral and written skills.
  • Use and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
  • Operating mechanical equipment for the use of the construction and maintenance of public facilities in the areas of streets, utilities, parks, landscape, recreation, and facility maintenance.
  • Procedures and techniques relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Purpose and use of variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
  • Properties of back fill materials, construction materials, asphalt, hot patch, cold patch, oil, paints, and a variety of other material materials used in maintenance work.
  • The application of pesticides.
  • All aspects related to pool and pond maintenance including how to balance and maintain water chemistry, calibrate chemical probes, monitor filtration system, etc.
  • Ability to :

  • Organize and oversee the work of a crew.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Maintain neat and accurate records.
  • Work without supervision; exercise sound independent judgments.
  • Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work, in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Use and operate required hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other environments.
  • Establish effective work relationships with city staff and the general public.
  • Experience and Education :

    Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

    Experience : Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public facilities including the areas of streets, utilities, parks, street landscape maintenance, facilities, and / or recreation, comparable to that of the Maintenance Worker Il in the City of Milpitas.

    Education : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

    Licenses or Certificates :

  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate, valid California Commercial Driver's License with Class B and tanker endorsement within 11 months of appointment.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), preferred
  • Special Requirements :

    Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment : Visual Requirements : Discern colors Auditory Requirements : 100-decibel hearing Physical exam, and drug and alcohol screening. Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day and occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year, confined spaces, hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals, herbicides and pesticides; ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.

    Supervision Received and Exercised :

  • Receives general supervision from assigned Senior Public Works Lead, Maintenance Supervisor or Public Works Division Manager.
  • Exercises indirect supervision over assigned maintenance personnel.
  • Selection Process :

    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews.
