Job description

Deputy Sheriff

This is for a Spring 2026 Academy for Non-Certified Candidates. Benefit Information includes a progressive work environment, yearly bonus for graduate degrees, multiple specialized units for career growth, tuition reimbursement, training opportunities, and attendance at the Ohio Peace Officer academy while earning salary as a Deputy Cadet (for non-certified candidates). A candidate with prior experience may be placed into any pay step at the sole discretion of the Sheriff.

The application process requires two steps. Please note that all of the following steps must be completed for an applicant to be considered for interview : Step 1 : Go to https : / / www.governmentjobs.com / careers / codelawareoh and complete an online application. Step 2 : Attend physical fitness testing. Information on physical fitness testing will be sent via email. A required part of the interview process for the position of Deputy Sheriff is a physical abilities test. The physical fitness assessment will consist of push-ups and sit-ups timed for 1 minute and a 1.5 mile run based on OPOTC age and gender standards. Successful completion of the physical abilities testing is required to be eligible for an interview. However, passing the physical testing does not guarantee that one will receive an invitation to interview. Candidates who have previously applied must wait at least one year from their most recent interview to be eligible for re-interview.

Incumbent is a Sworn and Certified Peace Officer. Incumbent performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, limb, and property. Incumbent reports to the Shift Sergeant and may function as Shift Sergeant in his or her absence. Completion of a secondary education or equivalent plus certification from the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council. Must be able to properly administer first aid / CPR. Must have a valid Ohio driver's license and a clean criminal record. Work consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks requiring application of numerous laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. Incumbent is required to quickly react to potentially threatening situations on a regular basis.

Essential functions include : preserving the peace and enforcing the laws of the state of Ohio, protecting the life and property of citizens as a sworn Peace Officer of Delaware County, patrolling assigned area, responding to criminal and civil calls as dispatched, apprehending violators of the law, performing vacant house and business checks, controlling traffic, transporting prisoners, providing county court and county building security as assigned, maintaining assigned vehicle and other equipment, preparing accurate and complete reports relative to each situation, investigating criminal activity including performing full investigation of misdemeanors, felonies, and traffic offenses, evaluating reported felony and misdemeanor offenses in assigned area, taking statements from suspects, victims, and witnesses, contacting complainants and witnesses in follow-up investigations, interrogating suspects and making arrests, providing surveillance of locations or persons as assigned, preparing criminal case files and developing probable cause of issuance of arrest or search warrants, appearing in court as a witness when required, representing the Sheriff's Office in the community including organizing and conducting community meetings and crime prevention program, working closely with residents and community management to resolve problems in assigned area, speaking to community groups, schools, and other organizations on law enforcement issues, educating the public in law enforcement practices and application of the law, ensuring the proper delivery of legal notices including executing warrants for arrest, search warrants, and probate court orders, serving individuals with summons, attachments, and other legal notices as issued by the court, receiving and coordinating requests for process service, maintaining complete and accurate records of time, place, and manner of serving legal notices and status of court orders, preparing reports required by courts in response to legal documents, and submitting reports to supervisor on daily activities and performing other related duties as assigned.
