Job description

Parks Maintenance Technician

This position assists in the maintenance of park grounds, athletic fields, and facilities.

Examples of duties include :

  • Participates in the maintenance of city parks, athletic fields, and related facilities; performs turf management duties; prepares athletic fields for play.
  • Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including athletic field condition, backhoe, truck, lawn mower, hedge trimmer, etc.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Stocks cleaning and bathroom supplies.
  • Opens and closes facilities.
  • Sets up facilities for rental and other events; cleans facilities following events.
  • Inspects and repairs playground equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance on assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Removes litter and debris from playgrounds, parking lots, pavilions, and other park facilities; empties trash receptacles.
  • Cleans and restocks restrooms.
  • Trims, removes and provides care for trees, bushes, and ornamental plants.
  • Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance and repair of pier facilities, portable restroom trailer, equipment, and hardware.
  • Performs related maintenance work, lawn care, landscaping, and irrigation on site.
  • Maintains inventory of all cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Performs carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical repairs as needed.
  • Maintains public volleyball courts.
  • Serves as contact for special events at the City Beach.
  • Works with Carpenters to repair boardwalk and blowout panels at pier.
  • Enforces pier rules and regulations.
  • Performs related duties.

Typical qualifications include :

  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Knowledge required by the position includes :

  • Knowledge of park grounds maintenance principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of athletic field maintenance principles.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • The work is subject to the supervision of the Parks and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

    The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of city parks and recreation facilities. Successful performance in this position contributes to the provision of safe and well-maintained parks for use by the general public.

    Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, contractors, vendors, and the general public. Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.

    PTO leave begins accruing immediately. The schedule varies slightly for Fire Fighters. Years of service completed annual leave cap available : less than 5 years : 152 hours, 5 to 9 years : 176 hours, 10 to 14 years : 200 hours, 15 to 19 years : 224 hours, 20+ years : 248 hours. PTO begins accruing immediately. At the end of the year, any unused annual leave will roll over to the next year. Time will be accrued bi-weekly and shown on each paycheck.

    Retirement : General employees are fully vested after 10 years of employment. Employees can become partially vested at five (5) years of service. Partial vesting at five (5) years is 50%, six (6) years 60%, seven (7) years 70%, eight (8) years 80%, and nine (9) years 90%. General employees are eligible for normal retirement upon the earlier of reaching age 55 and the completion of 10 years of credited service or reaching age 50 and the completion of 20 years of credited service. The amount of normal retirement benefit is based on your credited service and average final compensation.

    Employees receive 14 holidays per year, including New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday After Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and Employee's Birthday.

    Insurance : Florida Blue Health, Humana Dental & Securian Disability, Basic Life, and AD&D Insurance premiums are paid in full by the City for the Employee. Florida Blue Tiered Family Coverage available but paid by Employee via paycheck. Spouse Dental Coverage only $34.85 / month; Child / Children $49.31 / month; Family Dental Coverage $87.48 / month. Vision Coverage available : Employee only : $5.24 / month; Spouse only $10.50 / month; Child / Children $9.97 / month; and Family $15.67 / month). Both are covered by Humana. The City also offers a suite of Allstate Worksite products available for purchase.
