Experience with titrating drips. Description : The Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides care for a variety of surgical patients. The unit has 16 beds, along with 2 additional procedural beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 2 for general patients, and 1 : 1 for higher acuity patients. Common diagnoses include cardiovascular surgery, trauma, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, and other surgical procedures. Experience with continuous renal replacement therapy, intra-aortic balloon pump, Impella, and ECMO is preferred but not required. All nurses care for post-operative heart patients on a 1 : 1 basis. Nurses are required to titrate medications such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, propofol, and others. Charge nurses are present on every shift, and while they typically do not take patients, they may need to based on unit needs. Nursing supervisors are available 24 / 7, along with respiratory therapists. Registered Nurses are responsible for monitoring their own patients' telemetry and reading rhythm strips. Self-scheduling is encouraged while meeting the unit staffing requirements. Staff is expected to work every other weekend and every other holiday, with flexibility based on willingness. Floating to other units may be required based on staffing needs. Proper professional attire is expected, maintaining a clean appearance. There is a unit-specific orientation consisting of system onboarding and skills checklist completion.
