ELECTRICIAN - TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs skilled and technical work in the installation, maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment, and performs related duties as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Installs, tests and maintains mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment associated with the City buildings electrical systems, including but not limited to fire alarm systems, automatic gates, outdoor lighting and building / facility electrical systems and equipment;
  • Installs electrical equipment and lighting for special events as required;
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and / or replaces electrical and mechanical equipment as needed;
  • Performs electrical or general maintenance work as required for other divisions and departments;
  • Hangs banners and installs signage on City buildings as requested;
  • Performs all duties in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, City policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety;
  • Determines supplies, parts, tools and equipment needed to accomplish assigned tasks; obtains quotes for parts and supplies as necessary;
  • Maintains assigned vehicles, trucks and equipment;
  • Prepares and maintains detailed work records and reports;
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility;
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to completing records and forms, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, attending meetings, etc.;
  • Attends meetings, workshops, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills;
  • Inspects work in progress and after completion to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, standards and schedules;
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, such as vehicle, ice machines, computer controls, hand tools, diagnostic tools, etc.;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs various plumbing systems and equipment, including but not limited to bathroom fixtures, water heaters / coolers, water lines, valves, drain lines, water fountains, etc.;
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement;
  • Performs general carpentry work for building construction / renovation as required;
  • Pours and forms concrete; performs masonry work;
  • Hangs and finishes sheetrock; lays tile, carpet, linoleum, etc.;
  • Paints walls and other surfaces as needed;
  • Repairs roofing;
  • Repairs mechanical and electrical locks and locking systems;
  • Performs welding and fabrication work as needed;
  • Moves furniture and other heavy items as requested;
  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment;
  • Maintains accurate records on maintenance / repair work completed;
  • Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK :

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Some relevant prior experience;
  • Have or be able to obtain a valid South Carolina Class “A” Driver’s License within twelve (12) months from the date of hire or promotion;
  • Have or be able to obtain a Journeyman Electrician certification within twelve (12) months from the date of hire or promotion;
  • May have an IMSA certification.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Knowledge of basic algebra involving variables and formulas and / or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes, and / or computing discounts and interest rates;
  • Ability to compute or perform arithmetic operations using data or information;
  • Ability to speak or signal to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature;
  • Ability to lead, operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as HVAC equipment, electronic equipment, and heavy shop equipment; may involve installation and testing;
  • Ability to perform skilled work involving rules / systems with almost constant problem-solving;
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form;
  • Ability to perform clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure; and
  • Ability to guiding others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

    The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions : balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, fingering, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

    Work environment may involve exposure to bright / dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and / or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and / or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease / pathogens, toxic / caustic chemicals
