POSITION SUMMARY :
Assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. Assists with maintaining equipment and instruments as well as with supply inventory.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES :
- Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
- Checks supplies / instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures that all are working properly.
- Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for each surgical procedure.
- Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating Nurse or Nurse Manager.
- Provides a sterile field for surgical procedures. Ensures that the members of the surgical team are properly attired and assists the surgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site.
- Assists in the maintenance of the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques and informing the surgeon / surgical team of infractions.
- Anticipates and passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
- Counts sponges and sharps with the R.N. prior to the surgery and before the incision is closed.
- Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients for treatment.
- Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
- Cleans, wraps and prepares the instruments for sterilization.
- Assists in the maintenance of specialty surgical services.
- Prepares the sterile dressing for the patient's incision.
- Assists in the development of unit goals / objectives, quality improvement and cost containment measures.
- May assist in the scheduling of surgical procedures.
- Respects patient confidentiality in administration, employee, and patient issues by adhering to
HIPAA guidelines and demonstrates professional conduct.
Participates in mandatory in-services regarding CPR, Infection Control, Fire Safety, and OSHAUnderstands and adheres to established compliance, safety, and quality assurance standards.DISCLAIMER :

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS :
Certification, Registration, or Licensure : Successful completion of an accredited O.R. Technician program or equivalency (the accredited program requires one year of school) preferred; Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire.
Minimum Education : Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Experience : Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the Operating Room
Other : Basic computer knowledge; demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, physiology, and anatomy; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.

MENTAL : Must be flexible in a demanding environment. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Must be calm during times of crisis.PHYSICAL : Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to hear and talk over the telephone and in person with others, must be able to use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be able to move up to 50 pounds. Must have good vision with the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must be able to kneel, stoop, or crouch.Problem Solving :
This position has the authority to identify to operating room staff when there is a break in the sterile field and take appropriate corrective measures. This requires strong interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy. Representative challenges for the incumbent include maintaining a fast / rapid pace as well as working for multiple surgeons and anticipating their individual needs and preferences. Another challenge for the incumbent is ensuring the proper care, maintenance and coordination of surgical instruments and supplies.
