Description :

The unit has 70 beds.

The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1 : 4-5 during the day and 1 : 5-6 at night.

Common diagnoses include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various lung surgeries.

Chest tubes and esophagectomies are frequently managed, not from the post-anesthesia care unit.

RNs are required to titrate medication drips, mainly Cardizem and heparin.

There is a charge nurse available 24 / 7, who rarely takes patients.

A house supervisor is present 24 / 7.

Patient care technicians are available with varying ratios depending on the shift.

During the day, the ratio is 1 : 8-9; evenings, 1 : 9-10; and nights, 1 : 10-12.

Respiratory equipment including CPAP and BiPAP are utilized, primarily for patients' home regimens.

Heated high flow is used in special circumstances, such as with COVID patients.

Monitor technicians are present, and RNs must be able to read and interpret their telemetry strips using Phillips monitors.

Shifts are 12 hours, with weekend requirements every other weekend.

Holiday rotations are required, covering major holidays throughout the year.

RNs may float to other general medical units as necessary.

Scrub color is flexible, though certain prints are not permitted.

Unit-specific orientation may occur, depending on prior experience in similar facilities.
