Introduction :

The Koa Gallery has a reputation as one of the leading and most influential galleries in Hawai‘i. Showing work by local artists as well as international and regional artists, it has been a mainstay of the Hawaiian arts community for over 35 years. As a community college gallery, it is also the pillar of the arts education program at Kapi‘olani Community College, exhibiting student and faculty work as well as providing opportunities for students and the community to engage with artists, not only through exhibitions, but also through lectures, critiques, workshops, and visiting artist programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the Gallery Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the Koa Art Gallery and other campus exhibition spaces. The Gallery Coordinator will be responsible for bringing an innovative vision to the gallery programming that supports the mission of the college and the department.

Plans, curates, and supervises exhibition design, installation, and fabrication

Manages publicity, insurance, and shipping for all exhibitions.

Plans, coordinates, and oversees all receptions, opening events, and ancillary workshops and activities for each exhibition that bring together the students, faculty, staff, and administration as well as the community at large.

Coordinates and curates the annual student and faculty exhibitions in consultation and collaboration with the Department Chair

Chairs and regularly convenes the Koa Gallery Advisory Board in consultation and collaboration with the Department Chair and the UHF representative.

Schedules and supervises student workers.

Oversees gallery budgets in coordination with the Department Chair

Prepares quarterly reports related to the budget and all operations

Prepares grants as appropriate to support gallery programming in collaboration with the UHF representative.

Catalogs works from the permanent collection and from exhibitions and maintains the gallery database.

Works with prospective and current donors to the gallery and with the UHF Foundation

Coordinates the John Young scholarship, in particular publicizing the scholarship, assembles and oversees the selection committee, collects and maintains the art portfolios, and notifies the recipients in consultation and collaboration with the Department Chair, UHF foundation, and financial aid.

Teach one foundation studio art class or one art history class per semester. Develop and / or update course content and materials, teaching and assessment strategies methods to

improve student attainment of course competencies, and instructional and program-level learning outcomes;

address the learning needs of the college's diverse students;

integrate thinking and writing skills into course content, as appropriate;

use multimedia resources, including computers, where appropriate.

Plan, organize, and independently carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.

Perform other teaching-related duties that include, but are not limited to

preparing course syllabi and maintaining office hours or academic advising, and for conferring with students about course work (one office hour per week per three-credit class).

Develop and offer courses online.

Non-teaching duties include

working collegially to provide service to the department and college,

engaging in public service related to one's professional status and / or expertise,

engaging in professional development,

engaging in professional and scholarly activities related to one's disciplines or teaching,

perform related duties as assigned as part of regular workload; gallery duties may include evenings and weekends.

Coordinates annual student and faculty exhibitions

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Art or Fine Art; OR

Master recognition by Applied Art Community AND 10 years of related work experience.

Note : All minimum qualifications must be from an accredited institution and be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in gallery management and administration.

Exhibition design and curatorial experience.

Experience in grant writing.

Experience in budget oversight and management.

Background in foundation studio courses.

Background in art history.

Successful college-level teaching experience substantiated by student evaluations, peer evaluations, and / or other references.

Understanding of the needs of community college students.

Understanding of and experience working with a diverse student population, including students with disabilities and students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members from diverse backgrounds and serve as a liaison for the gallery.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to cultivate relationships with artists, scholars, and other individuals in the local contemporary art community.

Experience in digital skills required for budget management, exhibition announcements, press releases, and gallery administration.

Demonstrated commitment to professional self-development.
