Job description

Sanitation and Recycling Equipment Operator

City of Sheridan is hiring for the Sanitation and Recycling Equipment Operator role. This position is responsible for operating equipment used in the collection of trash and recyclables. The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate a variety of large trucks and heavy equipment and possess or be able to obtain a Wyoming Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Overview

Major duties

  • Operates trucks on a scheduled route.
  • Inspects truck and other equipment for safety and operational readiness; cleans and maintains assigned truck.
  • Performs welding on hoppers as needed.
  • Trims trees in alleys.
  • Performs shop maintenance and custodial duties.
  • Operates all equipment used to empty dumpsters.
  • Processes recyclables. Performs related duties.

Supervisory controls

The Sanitation and Recycling Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include city codes and the City of Sheridan Employee Handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation.

Complexity / Scope of work

The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather increases complexity. The purpose is to participate in waste collection operations to support efficient management of trash and recyclables.

Physical demands / Work environment

The work is typically performed outdoors and may involve standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. Lifting of objects is required, climbing ladders, and use of tools requiring dexterity. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, moving machinery, and may need protective equipment such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

The work may occur in cold or inclement weather and exposure to various chemicals may occur.

Minimum qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations commonly associated with high school or equivalent.
  • Experience relevant to the major duties typically gained through an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for five or more years.
  • Possession of a valid commercial driver's class B license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of Hazardous Waste Screening and Landfill Operator Certification.
