Student DeskWorker Overview :
- Student Desk Workers (SDW’s) are one tier of our security structure and first impressions of our Resident Halls. As a team member of the Office of Residential Life and Housing, SDW’s are an integral part of daily Residential Life Operations and overall experience for residents in our communities.
Student Desk Worker Expectations :
SDW’s are expected to arrive on time for all scheduled and assigned shifts.SDW’s are expected to stay for entire scheduled shifts.SDW’s are expected to find appropriate coverage for shifts they become unavailable to work.SDW’s are expected to actively participate in all training workshops and in-service programs.Student Desk Worker Qualifications :
SDW’s must stay in good academic standing by maintaining a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of or higher during employment.SDW’s must stay in good conduct standing with The University by not being on a probationary sanction status or higher during employment.Student Desk Worker Permitted Hours :
SDW’s are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week in accordance with ESU Regulations.

Fall 2025 :
Fall 2025 Move-In :
SDW’s will be expected to move-in on Friday, August 15th, 2025, by 4 : 00SDW’s training will begin on this date and continue through the weekend of Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th, 2025.SDW’s will hold no other commitments through Sunday, August 24th, 2025, to assist with move-in week and start of semester operations.August 18th-24th, 2025 - Residence Halls Move-In Occurs for the Fall 2025 Semester.Thanksgiving Break :
SDW’s will have Resident Hall Desk Operations until Tuesday, November 25, 2025. Residence Halls Close at 7 : 00 for Break.SDWs are required to stay and work until 8 : 00 , if scheduled for shifts.SDW’s will resume Resident Hall Desk Operations on Sunday, November 30, 2025.Residence Halls Open at 12 : 00 from Break.SDWs who are scheduled to work are required to return by 12 : 00pm / Noon, if scheduled for shift this date.Winter Break :
SDW’s will have Resident Hall Desk Operations until Friday, December 12th, 2025. Residence Halls Close at 7 : 00 for Break.SDWs are required to stay and work until 8 : 00 , if scheduled for shifts.SDW’s are required to operate adjusted schedules during Finals Week 2025 in relation to their exams schedule.Spring 2026 :
Spring 2026 Move-In :
SDW’s will be expected to move-in on Friday, January 16th, 2026, by 4 : 00SDW’s training will begin on this date and continue through the weekend of Saturday, January 17th and Sunday, January 18th, 2026.Thanksgiving Break :
SDW’s will have Resident Hall Desk Operations until Friday, March 6th, 2026. Residence Halls Close at 7 : 00 for Break.SDWs are required to stay and work until 8 : 00 , if scheduled for shifts.SDW’s will resume Resident Hall Desk Operations on Sunday, March 15th, 2026.Residence Halls Open at 12 : 00 from Break.SDWs who are scheduled to work are required to return by 12 : 00pm / Noon, if scheduled for shift this date.Spring Move-Out :
SDW’s will have Resident Hall Desk Operations until Saturday, May 9th, 2026. Residence Halls Close at Noon on Sunday, May 10th for Summer 2026.SDWs are required to stay and work until 8 : 00 , if scheduled for shifts.SDW’s are required to operate adjusted schedules during Finals Week Spring 2026 in relation to their exams schedule.NOTE : Dates and Times listed are subject to change during Summer 2025SDW General Responsibilities :
SDW’s are expected to enforce and affirm that all residents and guests swipe into respective resident halls each time entering a resident hall.Be available to assist in all openings and all closings of your assigned residence hall as listed above in theEmployment Timeline for the 2025-2026 Academic Year.SDW’s will file a Duty Log for all shifts worked for the Office of Residential Life and Housing to document events of shifts.Build a good working relationship with your immediate assigned resident hall team and building members.Provide excellent customer service to all residents and guests of the building.Actively and regularly communicate with Supervisor, Assistant Director of Residential LifeActively and regularly communicate with Pro Staff of assigned resident hall.Actively and regularly fellow staff members using multiple means (electronic and in person) as defined by your supervisor(s).Serve as a role model and set a good example for residents.Be aware of your own emotional, mental, and physical health to maintain proper self-care.Seek appropriate help when needed. (You cannot help others if you are not healthy yourself).Attend staff meetings and meet individually with Pro Staff of assigned resident hall.Assist in the training of new staff members as requested.Read and implement staff announcements and directives.Enforce and report University policies and procedures.Fulfill assigned clerical duties while at the desk (ex : answer telephone / take message, refer package requests to central office.Serve as a resource and referral person of university operations and the functions of the various University administrative offices.Recognize and fulfill your responsibilities with evacuation drills and other emergency situations.Respect individual privacy and the confidential nature of information about individual students per guidelines from the Office of Residential Life and Housing.Comply with and enforce all Federal, State and Local Laws and all University regulations.All SDW’s are responsible for other duties as assigned.PLEASE NOTE : Responsibilities are subject to change.Additional Information :
