Job description

The NYGC Early Career Development (Post-Baccalaureate) program provides recent undergraduates with exceptional scientific training and research experience in faculty and non-faculty laboratories, leveraging NYGC's unique scientific strengths in genomics, computational biology, technology innovation, and clinical genetic testing. In addition to their scientific work, program participants will be offered various mentorship, programming, and enrichment opportunities that will introduce them to different career paths in the public or private sector or graduate school options. Program participants will be offered a two-year full-time position at the NYGC, starting in summer 2026.

Participants in the NYGC Early Career Development (Post-Baccalaureate) program will be placed in an NYGC Lab (e.g., Vickovi Lab, Sanjana Lab, Landau Lab) or department that fits the participant's educational and career background and interests.

Requirements & Qualifications

The NYGC Early Career Development (Post-Baccalaureate) program is open to candidates with a strong commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Applicants must meet the following criteria :

B.S. / B.A. degree holders or current / rising seniors in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field from an accredited college or university (Degree must be awarded prior to the program start date in summer 2026);

Less than three years since graduation at the time of application submission. Individuals who wish to apply but cannot satisfy this requirement may provide a statement explaining their circumstances;

Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Work Flexibility

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position will be required to work onsite at the New York Genome Center but is eligible for a flexible work schedule with supervisory approval.

Program participants will receive valuable professional experience in our laboratories and computational facilities to prepare them for career paths in the public or private sector, or graduate school training. The program offers competitive benefits that include :

Two-year full-time position with a specific NYGC lab / group that fits participants' educational / career background and interests;

Professional and skills development workshops designed specifically for program participants. Sample topics include : wet lab training, programming, single cell sequencing, large scale genomics analysis, CRISPR, spatial transcriptomics, grant writing, career panels, graduate school application guidance;

NYGC-wide events for the broader scientific community and networking opportunities with attendees at these events. Examples of these events include New York Cancer Genomics Research Network Meetings, Center for Integrated Cellular Analysis Lecture Series, Monthly Scientific Working Group Evening Lectures, Lecture Series for NYGC Affiliate Members, Center for the Study of the Non-coding Cancer Genome Lectures, Weekly NYGC Lab Meetings, NYGC Sequencing Informatics Workshop;

Extensive and personalized mentoring by NYGC faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students through regular 1 : 1 meetings that aim to discuss participants' career / academic goals and address any challenges;

Opportunity for participants to present their research at NYGC lab meetings as well as at the end of the program;

Graduate school application guidance;

Yearly salary and benefits : $65,000, and eligibility for NYGC employee benefits including : heath / dental / vision insurance, generous paid time off, 401(k) plan with company match, wellness and family care benefits, and tuition reimbursement, among others;

A $1,500 relocation allowance (must reside at least fifty (50) miles from NYGC on the date of the offer of employment); and

Opportunity to transition to a regular staff role if a suitable position is available.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas : neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty, whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.
