Job Overview
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of their business operations, evaluates and selects alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, identifies compliant methods of meeting tax regulations, and serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The role includes understanding and communicating potential risks, monitoring changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The Senior Manager is a critical member of the office / region leadership team, actively participates in marketing, networking, and business development, while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients and internal teams comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and adhering to BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Conduct top‑level review of T / R, resolve all tax issues with client; involve specialists when appropriate.
- Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client and / or partner as appropriate.
Research
Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.Identify complex issues for the engagement team, provide efficient research methodology, and train managers / staff on research skills.Involve firm specialists as needed.ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply and proactively enforce firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48.Help others learn and apply these standards; review tax provisions and prepared workpapers.Explain and discuss uncertain tax positions and ASC 740 complexities with clients.Tax Consulting
Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes.Apply tax knowledge and business / industry insights to recommend solutions and manage risk.Coordinate with STS specialists; monitor implementation of client service plans; manage agency inquiries and appeals.Implement firm strategies and manage client expectations.Tax Specialization
Develop in‑depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation (e.g., corporate, pass‑through, international, etc.).Organize and conduct external CPE training sessions, at least once per year.Mentor managers / seniors / associates on specialization areas.Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new ideas to improve clients’ tax positions, firm performance, or personnel.Research and implement innovative strategies; continuously suggest improvements to work products.Lead marketing campaigns (if applicable) and present complex strategies to clients.Other duties as required.Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.Train associates and seniors on current software tools.Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.Schedule and manage workloads of associates and senior associates.Provide verbal and written performance feedback.Education
Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.Experience
Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting / professional services experience.Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.Prior supervisory experience required.License / Certifications
CPA, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required.Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.Software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.Language
