This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders. Dispensing and administering medications is part of the role. The RN assists the Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care and treatment of inmates / residents. All technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure are performed. Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the treatment of inmates / residents. The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates / residents. A list of inmates / residents to be examined is prepared. The examining room and equipment are prepared. The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required. Calls to the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders are made as needed. Examinations and assessments of new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries are conducted. Inmates / residents who become ill or injured are referred to the emergency room or other healthcare facilities as warranted. Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider is notified for treatment orders. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is assisted. The RN maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and contract providers. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services are conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of these services. Confidentiality of all medical records is maintained. Assistance is provided to review medical files to ensure all services are documented. Monitoring of potential catastrophic illnesses is conducted closely. Audits of pharmacy use for adherence to formulary are performed as directed. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required. Observation and recording of inmate / resident behavior is conducted. The medical unit is inspected for items that could conceal contraband. Health counseling and health education are provided on an individual or group basis as required. Assistance is provided to prepare and maintain various records, reports, and logs using proper grammar. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents are required. Reviewing, processing, and responding to lawsuits and attending court hearings when necessary is part of the role. Physical safety requirements necessary for providing a safe working environment are evaluated and recommended. Facilitation, where applicable, of accreditation of the medical program is required. Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required. Appropriate action is taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies. Escort or coordination of the movement of inmates / residents for medical treatment is performed. Searching of people and objects capable of concealing contraband involves detecting and identifying objects. Functions in confined areas that include working rotating shifts and physically checking security are engaged in. Appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations is taken.
