About the Position

Career Opportunity

The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Assistant City Surveyor This position supervises, assigns and reviews the work of staff responsible for survey services; to participate in professional survey services; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and / or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from the City Surveyor.

Exercises direct supervision over technical and clerical staff. Exercises functional and technical supervision over professional staff.

Type of Examination A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examinationFalsification of information may result in disqualification from recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

Eligible List

You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.

The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.

Selection Process

Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include a hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.

Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

Note : Effective with pay period beginning July 20, 2025, employee pay rates will be reduced by 1.625% due to increase in NVPERS contribution.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Essential Functions

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff responsible for survey services; Participate in the work of professional survey services.
  • Apply survey information and reduce field notes to create designs and drawings for various engineering and planning projects; calculate a wide variety of survey data; prepare maps and reports based on survey data.
  • Assist in establishing schedules and methods for providing survey services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Review survey and subdivision maps submitted to the city; ensure the technical correctness of all maps.
  • Plan, assign, and manage topographic, construction, property, geodetic and other engineering surveys; coordinate surveys for various city departments; meet with inspectors and contractors to determine survey needs.
  • Supervise, coordinate and participate in the work of field survey crews; operate a full range of survey equipment including theodolites, levels, transits, EDMs, GPS, High Definition Scanners, UAV mapping systems, and other equipment to acquire precise survey data; resolve complex surveying issues and problems.
  • Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to develop short and long term goals, monitor accomplishments, establish performance requirements and personal development targets and provide coaching for performance improvement and development.
  • Maintain accurate, orderly and legible field notes of survey work performed and data collected by the Survey Section.
  • Establish schedules and methods for improving services; coordinate work with that of other staff, divisions, departments and agencies.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and administration of the section budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenses; estimate time, materials and equipment required to accomplish goals and objectives and requisition materials as needed.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints.

Marginal Functions

  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of survey.
  • Coordinate and participate in the typing, filing and related documentation of work.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Experience

    Three years of increasingly responsible professional (post-license) surveying experience including one year of lead or supervisory responsibility.

    Training

    Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in surveying / geomatics or a related field.

    License or Certificate

    Possession of an appropriate valid Professional Land Surveyor license in any state on the date of application, and possession of a Nevada Professional Land Surveyor license within six months of the date of appointment.

    Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application.

    Perform technical research and solve difficult survey problems.

    Prepare and maintain technical survey records and prepare comprehensive reports.

  • Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7 / 1 / 15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.

  • The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
