About the Role

The company is seeking a Head of FIU / AML Operations & Workforce Management to build and lead the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in the US. This leader will be responsible for overseeing FIU operations, managing alert generation and allocation, and scaling a team of investigators and operations staff.

This role combines operational oversight with workforce management, ensuring that investigations and alerts are handled effectively and sustainably across a team of 10–15 professionals. It also requires direct engagement with regulators and law enforcement, making prior experience in government or regulatory liaison work highly desirable.

The role is global in scope, requiring collaboration with senior stakeholders across the US, APAC, EMEA, and MENA. The successful candidate must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA or New York, NY in a hybrid capacity, though remote candidates willing to travel regularly may be considered. Payments industry experience is a non-negotiable requirement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and manage FIU operations, including alert generation, queue management, and investigative workflow.
  • Oversee Level 2 investigations, ensuring timely resolution and quality casework.
  • Establish workforce management processes to balance workloads and prevent backlogs across a growing team.
  • Act as a primary liaison with regulators and law enforcement, serving as the external face of FIU operations.
  • Collaborate with global AML leadership to align operational processes with program strategy.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of 10–15 investigators and operations professionals.
  • Drive continuous improvements in efficiency, scalability, and alert management.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of AML, FIU, or compliance operations experience, ideally within fintech or payments (banking backgrounds considered but payments experience strongly preferred).
  • Proven experience building and managing FIU operations, including workforce management and investigative functions.
  • Strong investigative background; prior government or law enforcement experience (e.g., retired GS-15) highly desirable.
  • Direct experience engaging with regulators and law enforcement agencies.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to thrive in ambiguity and fast-moving environments.
  • Bilingual Mandarin and English strongly preferred.
